THE HANKOW RAILWAY

·

The most important advance in Hankow is the railway to Peking: it now reaches as far as Yen:cheng, 384 kilometres or about 240 miles. The line near Yenicheng crosses the river Lanwan, which taps all the trade of the big market town Choukiakou, considered to be one of the largest commercial centres in Honan, Now it is certain that instead of sending their cargoes down the Lanwan river to Chinkiang, which takes at least 21 days, the merchants will make use of the railway and send their Cargoes by rail to Hankow, This is not the only important town which is tapped by the railway. One train a day leaves from either end of the line, the Hankow train leaves Hankow, "Hankow Ville" at 730 am. nd the amount of cargo and passengers which crowds the train is really wonderful. The Railway Company has already discovered that Hankow Ville "must be the station for Hankow, and is now filling in the ditch which was originally made when building the em- bankment, as the double line at the station does not give sufficient room to allow trucks, etc. to be easily shunted.-M. Five Generals-Commy-in-Chief to be created commanding the troops in five districts. 3. Eight "administrative Districts," undermajor generals, who will manage all routine work, to be established. 4. Nineteen brigade districts be created, and all infantry and cavalry to be brigaded. 5. A corps of army paymasters to be established. 6. A General Staff to-be tablished. 7. The linked-battalion system for foreign drafts to be abolished. 8. The old numbers to be resumed by the regiments.
