"RAGGING" „NURSES.

STORY OF A MOCK TRIAL AND SENTENCE.

t

A remarkable case of ragging among some of the nurses at the Toot ng Bec Asylum has just come to light.

F

The asylum, which stands at one corner of Tooting Graveney Common, 14 a large and imposing red-brick building, which was only recently built by the Metropolitan Asylum Board. It has accommodation for about 700 patients, mile and fem ile, and it was opened

Most of the patients are between go and 70 years of age in the female portion, in which there are nearly 400 lunatics, there are about 70 nurses, who live in the home" just inside the gales,

In each ward in the asylum proper there are three nurses-a head nurse, an assistant, and a third nurse. Each has a day off at stated in- tervals, and her place is taken by a relief

nurse.

A little time ago a "relief" came into one of the wards to take the place of one of the three nurses. At about this time there had been some talk-more or less unfounded about the treatment of some of the patients, and on the afternoon of the "reliefs" appear ance it is alleged that she went to the matron and reported that the nurse whose place she was temporarily taking had been ill-treating one of the old ladies in the ward..

A MOCK TRIAL.

Inquiries were made, and in the course of an hour or so the other nurses on day duty heard the story. Their work over, a council of war was held, and it was decided forthwith to pay the nurse nut. One of the girls suggested a "ragging" and a mock trial in one of the

bedrooms of the home.

This was adopted with a good deal of glee among some of the younger nurses, and with just a sprinking of spite, perhaps, among some of the others.

THE BRIGHT SIDE

of life. It is a feeling common to the majority of us that we do not get quite the amount of happlaess we are entitled to. Among the count- less things which tend to make us more or less miserable ill health takes first place. Hannah More said that sin was generally to be attrl- buted to 'biliousness. No doubt a crippled liver with the resulting impure blood, is the cause of more mental gloom than any other single thing. And who can reckon up the fearful aggregate of pain, loss and fear arising from the many ailments and diseases which are familiar in mankind; like a vast cloud it hangs over a multitude no can number. You can see these people every. where. For them life can scarcely be said to have any "bright side at all. Hence the eagerness with which they search for relief and cure. Remedies like

one

WAMPOLE'S PREPARATION have not attained their high position in the confidence of the people by bald assertions and boasting advertisements. They are obliged to win it by doing actually what is claimed for them. That this remedy deserves its reputation is conceded. It is palatable as honey and contains the nutritive and curative properties of Pure Cod Liver Oil, combined with the Compound Syrup of Hypophosphites and the Extracts of Malt and Wild Cherry, Nothing has such a record of success in Acrofula, Anemia, Throat and Lung Troubles, and

emaciating complaints and disorders, that tend to undermine the foundations of strength and vigour. Its use helps to show life's brighter side. Dr. H. L. Reddy, B. A, M. D., L. R. C. S., Edinburg —L R. C. P.. Londan, -Physician Woman's Hospital-Professor University of Bishops College, Canada, says: "I have much pleasure in stating that I have used it in cases of debility and have found it to be a very valuable remedy as well as pleasing to take." You can take it with the assurance of getting welf, It never disappointe. Sold by all chemists. 48]

The idea was to duck the offender, and as there was no fountain handy it was suggested that the bathroom at the end of the corridor would answer the purpose. So, when all was quiat, the bath was filled with ice-cold water, and eight nurses marched along in their stock-N accordance with the provisions of Ordin

inged feet to the bedroom where the un- suspecting victim lay..

She was fast asleep. Her room was entered silently, and the first intimation she had of what was happening was the sudden jerking away of her bedclothes,

The next moment balf-a-dozen pairs of strong young arms were around her. She kicked out hard, and tried to scream, but was held firmly, and one of the girls prevented her from making much noise.

"PRISONER" GETS PARTLY PREP.

As all the eight young reggers could not crowd into the bath-room, on account of is size, the "prisoner" managed to get one lrg and one arm free.

"We're going to give you a good ducking- and serve you right," cried one of the mem- bers of the court martial.

The prisoner struggled all the harder, and there was a fierce fight in the bathroom. Two or three times the resisting nurse was carried to the edge of the bath, but every time she wriggled away, exhausted and gasning.

In the final Homeric struggle the prisoner's lip was rather badly cut, and the sight of the blood evidently cooled the ardor of her tormen- tors, for they ceased their efforts to throw her into the bath, and ended by scooping up the water in their bands and throwing it over her.

This pretty draina was carried on in the dark, so that the victi» should not be abl⋅ 10 identify any of her as-ilants. She recognised the voice of one of them, however, but she was game enough not to "rphit, when the time came for explanation: and dismissals,

When the "christening was over the nurse managed to craw' away, with her mouth bleed- ing, her nightdress torn, and nearly fainting with fatigue.

THE AMERICAN SYSTEM or

ENTISTRY,"

In the morning she went to Dr. Beresford, DE the medical superintendent, and told him what bad happened. She refused, however, to give the names of her persecutors but Dr. Rerez- ford had his suspicions, and sent for two nurses, whom he taxed with the ragging.

They admited that they had taken part in it, and the superintendent at once discharged them. They like their victim--absolutely refuted to mention names.

Upon this the six remaining nurses came forward and admitted complicity. They said if the other two girls had gone they would go. And they went.

Seen by a press représentative Dr. Beresford, the medical superintendent, described the whole thing as a foolish, an unseemly, and an un- fortunate occurrence. "It was abunlutely necessary to dismiss the guilty nurses,” he said "and that was done without the slightest delay." The representative was informed that the nurse who was " ragged" was herself dismissed several days later. She was out on night leave and instead of returning be the gates, and re- porting herselt in the usual manner, it is stated
