A KEY CODE

We have received from the Hongkong Observatory a new code of

meteorological

signals which comes into force at Hongkong on New Year's Day. They are the same as those at present in use at Shanghai, and will be boisted on the mast beside the time-ball a Kowloon Paint for the information of masters

of

vessels leaving the port. They do out neces sarily imply that bad weather is expected. The signals are as follows:-

A cone point upwards indicates a typhoon' to the North of the Colony.

A cone point upwards for tum below in dicates a typhoon to the worth-East of the Colony.

A drum indicates a typhoon to the East of the Colony..

A cone point downwards and drum below indicates a typhoon to the South-East of the Colony,

A cone point downwards indicates a typhoon to the Sonth of the Colony.

A cone point downwards and ball below indicates a typhoon to the South-West of the Colony,

A ball indicates a typhoon to the West of the Colony.

A cone point upwards and ball below indicates a typhoon to the North-West of the Colony,

Red Signals indicate that the centre is believed to be more than 300 miles away from the Colony,

Black Signals indicate that the centre is believed to be less than 300 miles away from the Colony,

The above signals will, as heretofore, be hoisted only when typhoons exist in such posi tions or ate moving in such directions that in formation regarding them is considered to be of importance to the Colony or to shipping leav ing the harbour.

NIGHT SIGNALS. -

Two lanteras boitted vertically indicate bad weather in the Colony and that the wind is expected to veer.

The signals are repeated on the flagstaff of the Godowa Company at Kowloon, and also, by day only, at the Barbour Office and on M's Recalving Ship.

LOCAL STORM-WARNINGS.

The Colony itself is warned of approaching typhoons by means of the Typhoon Gún placed

at the food of the mast, which is fired whenever

a strong gala of wind is expected to blow here,

It contains observations made at Hongkong and at a number of stations in the Far East, together with Remarks, Weather. forecasts and information regarding the esiste ence and movements of typhooni based thereon,

Masters of vessels or their gunia may, whenever necessary, call at the Telegraph Company's Office in Connaught Rond and send telegrams to the Observatory asking for "pecial information without charge, Such Inquiries may also be sent from the Police Station at Kowloon Point which is connected with the Observatory by telephone.
