A FAMOUS 'PRENTICE.

·THE STORY OF WILL ADAMS, THE FIRST,

ENGLISHMAN IN JAPANË

The development of modern Japan, and. especially of its naval resources, has been so deeply tinged by English influences that it is ...interesting to recall the first of our country men who ever landed on the shores of Marco Polo's Zipangu, Three centuries ago Will Adams, the English-sailor, born at Gillingham in Kent, was in Japan, building ships which, though they could not compare with the vessels that Elswick and the Clyde har turned out for modem japan, were yet so superior to the native craft that the Tycoon refused to allow the Englishman to return to his native land. And there he died an exile, some 230 years before his countrymen returned in force to re-open trade with the land of the chry.

AN ASPIRING APPRENTICE. Will Adama tells us in the letters to his wife which constitute our main knowledge of his adventurous life, that he was brought up at Limehouse, near, London," where he was for twelve years prentice to one master, Nicholas Diggins. He then served as master and pilot in the Queen's ships, and was for eleven or twelve years in the service of the Com- pany of Barbary merchants. Then came the rush for the gold and spices of the Indies, in which, as he quaintly save, "I was desirous to make a little experience of the smali knowledge which God hath given me." Japan has passed through at that time the two first stages of its relations with Western eations. Shortly after Marco Polo-who was at Pekin in 1778-bad brought to Europe news of the existence of Zipango, the Japanese met the invasion of the Mongal hordes of Kublai Khan.. That great conqueror was inspired by some of those prin. ciples of expansion which have their votaries in our own day. "Already," he said, "philoso phers desire to see all mankind one family I am determined to carry out this principle' even though I should be obliged to do so by force of arms; it is now the business of the King of Nipon in decide what course is most agreeable to him" Then, as now. Japan was not inclined to "take it lying down," and Kublai Khan was so decisively muted that for years the Japanese harried the Chinese coast in their pirate barks almost unmolested:--

AN ADVENTUROUS APPRENTICE. It was in 1542 that the Porturuese, and with them the Jesuits, were first received in Japan Their influence on the population was soon too great to please the Mikado, and in 187 the era of banishments and executions of the Jesuits begao. It was at this period that the Dutch, ever anxious to share in the riches of the Far East, fitted out the little trading fleet in

which Will Adams embarked at the Texel in 1598. There were five vessels equipped by the Dutch East India Company, but only one reached Japan, the ship Erasmus, of which Adams was pilot. We know of two ather Englishmen in the feet, Adams's brother Thomas, and one Timothy Shotion, who had been with Thomas (avendish in his voyage round the world. Neither of his two com. patriots, however, lived to reach Japan with Will Adams. Thomas Adams was slain by the Spaniards off the coast of Chili, while Shotton and the vessel of which he was pilot, were lost on the long voyage across the Pacific, in those days a voyage to Japan was a tedious affair, beset by winds and waves, with Spaniards and Portingals, disease and death, lurking on every hand. It was nearly two years from their sailing that, in April, 1600, the crew of the Erasmus, sick and weak with scurvy, saw at last the high land of Japan. Owing to the death of the captain Adams, the pilot, was ordered to land for an audience of the Tycoon, the executive Emperor. There were still some Portingals at the Court. and they maliciously reported that the heretics were pirates, and not honest traders. Adams spoke op bluntly enough to the Emperor, declaring that his nation was at peace with all the world save the Spaniards and Portuguese. The Englishman and the ship were alike detained, but at last the Emperor replied to the importunities of the Fortuguese that "because their two countries were at war was no reason why to please Portings, he should slay Dutch and Englishmen."

The English factory was relinquished dur ing the troubles of our civil wars, and the social convolitons which attended the final expel

sion of the Jesuits, and the extermination of Christianity, led to a policy of exclusiveness, so that it was not until 1854 that Will Adami's countrymen regained the legal right to visit and dwell and trade in Zipangu.

THE HEAVIEST MAN IN LANCASHIRE,

Carrying his enormous weight with ease, and rather proud of his unusual proportions, Mr. Samuel, Brooks, 4, Punch-strect, Déane-road, Bolton, England, is quite a conspicuous person in his own town. He was apprenticed, over thirty years ago, to the trade of a House-Painter, and when he had "served his time" like a good man and true, he went into bis father's business. His weight is

NO LES THAN 355 POUNDS- twenty five stone and five pounds-yet be regards it as no incumbrance, and so far from causing him discomfort it appear to be rather a source of satisfaction to him. He is a tho- roughly healthy man-none more so in England

and Dr. Williams' pink pills for pale people are, he says, the cause of his recovery from the unly illness which has seriously affected him. Of course the pills had nothing to do with his great weight. That is natural to him. Nor is it health alone that he owes to this medicine. His worldly prosperity, threatened by illness, has also been indirectly saved by Dr. Williams. "It was three years ago," said he in explanation, "when
