~HONGKONG÷ METEOROLOGICAL

SIGNALS.

A NEW CODE.

We have received from the Hongkong Observatory a new code of meteorological signals which comes into force at Hongkong on New Year's Day. They are the same as those at present in use at Shanghai, and will be hoisted on the mast beside the time-ball a Kowloon Paint for the information of masters of vessels leaving the port. They do not neces

sarily imply that bad weather is expected. The signals are as follows:-

A cone point upwards indicates a typhoon to the North of the Colony

A cone point, upwards jand drum below in- dicates a typhoon to the North-East of the

Colony.

A drum indicates a typhoon to the East of the Colony.

A cone point downwards and drum botow indicates a typhoon to the South-East of the

Colony.

1

A cone point downwards indicates a typhoon to the South of the Colony,

ADVERTISING DEPARTMENT. The Hongkong Telegraph is the best medium for advertising in China. It circulates largely among all classes of the community, is the largest daily newspaper and has a wider circulation than any journal in the Fara

East.

A cone point downwards and ball below indicates a typhoon to the South-West of the Colony,

A ball indicates a typhoon to the West of the Colony.

A cone point upwards and ball below indicates typhoon to the North-West of the Colony. Red Signals indicate that the centre is. believed to be more than 300 miles away frem

Special attention given to effectively display- the Colony. fug advertisements.

The type used as a standard for setting advertisements is similar to this, unless we are instructed to display the advertisement, when any elective style of type will be adopted The standard tans exactly eight lines to the ine, and abam eight words 10 tis buc.

Black Signals indicate that the centre is believed to be less than 300 miles away from the Colony.

The above signals will, as heretofore, be boisted only when typhoons exist in such post- tions or are moving in such directions that in- formation regarding them is considered to be of importance to the Colony or to shipp uy leav ing the harbour,
