That excellent publication, the Navy League Journal, has often urged on the British public that, the sums spent in mamtaming our naval efficency and superior. ity in time of peace were nothing more than an insurance premmar against the destruction of our cudemerce during war trine. It would be difficult for the able exponents of dis theory to find a more weighty and coaciu- sive proot of the truth of their argument than is offered by the present action of the Nippon Yusen Kaisha There is little doubt that other Japanese compames, interested in the coasting trade, will shortly follow the example of their leading shipping firm, which means that the rapid and successful action of the Navy of the Mikado will be the means not only of ensuring the transportation in absolute security of the Japanese legions, that are being thrown into Kuren, but of putting sampurtant profits into the pockets of its shipping firms, and, more important still,

justified in chartering a fleet of foreign steamers, to fulfill the requirements of their trade, is a splendid proof of the first fruits of Japan's naval preparedness, and a fine example of the daring and enterprise of her big shipping firm. ALFRED HOT AND CHINA MUTUAL LINE.

There has been for several weeks pasi extra- ordinary activity displayed at the Morpeth and Egerton Docks. One day recently, the spectacle in the dock was unique, for there were four Holt left on the same day. These were the Idemineus, boats in evidence at the same time, and they

The Machuon was only departing to visit some British ports with goods before preparing a return journey. The ships outward bound one week were the Menelaus, for Shanghai, and the Rhipeus, for Penang, Singapore, Hongkong and Japan, The latter is an extra and special boat, which has been on the station to meet energencies, in consequence of the two outward-going Far East boats, the Idomeneus ard the Agamemnon, being unable last week to take in the cargo, which arrived from Manchester, Lancashire generally and other centres. There was various reasons assigned for the abnormal spurt in the Far East trade, the chief and most popstar one being that ship- pers were anxious to get their goods landed, if possible, in China and Japan before the out- break of hostilities. This, however, is not regarded in the offical circles immediately con- cerned as the real reason, though it may ac count to a large extent for the undoubted in- crease of shipments.
