A TRIP TO SWATOW.

Having a great desire to see more of China than can be seen in Hong Kong, writes a cor respondent, when my friends Smith and Jones suggested my joining them in a trip to Swatow I accepted with pleasure, and after having suc. cessfully obtained ten days' leave, 'we started off in the s.s. Halleong, one of the Douglas Lapraik Company's vessels. After an eighteen- hours' run we arrived at Swatow, where we found a houseboat awaiting us. Boarding this we sailed down to "to mile fat." The first night we had no cook, so had to prepare our dinner as best we could. Smith rose to the eccasion magnificently and after much burning of fingers and consequent strong language served us up a poppery compound which he said was Irish, Stow. Jones faid the table and I peeled potatoes and opened various tins. Smith and Jones were rude enough to say that after 1 had peeled a potato there was nothing left; but I have never tasted such potatoes in my life. Our cook turned up next day and was greeted with joy by three hungry wayfarers, and proved a most welcome addition to our party. The place was warming with duck and geese, but we could not get near them. A typhoon had struck the place two months before and breaking the banks flooded the whole country. Thus the pet feed. ing grounds could not be got at, and as the weather was bright and sunny the ducks drifted with the tide sitting lazily on the water till a boat came near them when they got too yards off. With much hard work we got up 114 birds, Our bag included bean geese, pintail, mallard, merganser shovellers, common teal, snipe our-

Is it for the cold they are crying, or because of a coffin under a pall that has been placed before the altar? A friendly Pole sidles up, and says that it contains a youth of delicate constitution, who has suc- combed to the winter. He was taken ill the very first day of it,” he adds significantly,

Here and there in the streets a fire has been lit by order of the mayor, and the peasants as they pass with their carts come running up to it and bathe the fands with evident satisfac tion in the subtle fame. In the great cathe dral square no one is visible, but hundreds of started sparrows' rise from the snow and fly away. In the outskirts scarcely a sign of life, but, in honour of the Christmas season, red, white, and blue streamers hang from some of the windows of the houses, in pleasing contrast with the delicate fretwork of the snow-bes- prinkled trees. After dark no attempt is made to utilise the oil-lamps which stand at intervals along the side streets, and such artificial illu- mination as there is proceeds from the panes All Claims must reach us before the 29th of shop windows, dim with steam. No Fire Insurance will be effected. tric trams pass with a strange, whirring wound, casting a streak of light upon the snow, and Bills of Lading will be countersigned by the now and then a sledge glides by noiselessly. But it is not so much the solitude at the silence that astonishes in this town that occupies an area of twenty square miles, unbroken as the silence oftenest is, save for the neighing of a horse, or the bark of a dog, or the noise of a spade as

Being now to shooting in Swatow we had omitted to take the follow- ing which I consider Indispensable for a big bag- 8-bore gun firing about Ave drams, a punt or a collapsible boat and some decoys. A WINTER DAY IN RUSSIA.

Though undoubtedly the Russian winter is much superior from the artist's point of view to the nondescript season which in England is honoured by that name, yet it must be ad- mitted that there are one or two respects in which England has the advantage. For the sourest Puritan, if he would but confess it, experiences a certain sensation of enjoyment, as he lingers on a cold December morning on. derneath his sheets and quilt of eider-down, whereas in Russia, owing to the scant clothing on the beds and the warmth that is kept up in the room throughout the night, summer and winter are the same as far as staying in bed is concerned. The one rug that does duty for counterpane and blankets fo, no doubt, upan the door ere half the night. be done, and the uneasy sleeper will have his slumbers inter- rupted by an occasonal imperious desire to keep a marvellously short sheet over his ra- cumbent form, so that when the usual hour for rising sounds, he will probably get up withcot any feeling of reluctance, and look out at inter- vals into the street through the double windows of his room, as he performs his leisurely toilet. Oh the charms of it as the day goes on! The sky is blue perhaps, the sun shines radiantly, and over the snowy road the sledges glide with their freight of fur-clad males or rosy, laughing girls. On the box sits Nicholas, his ample form swelled to twice its ordinary size under the long blue caftan, fastened round the waist with a flaming belt; his beard is spread out like a fan upon his chest) on his head there is a high-crowned cap, with an outside lining of fur. As for the horse, it may be an Orlovsky trotter stepping out proudly and dragging the
