affair by their unbusinesslike rapacity they have lost the purchaser! Qutry, have they? Well, why don't the shareholders insist upon this course being followed, do you ask? The answer is, I fear, because they have not the power. The directors hold too much scrip vide Mr. Twentyman's own, admission, which hold. ings have been largely increased since, and they can do as they like and an annual meeting of shareholders is largely only a formality now. It would be interesting to know how much scrip they do actually hold as compared with outside shareholders. How much of the capital, for instance, does Mr. Twentyman hold? H considered the scrip cheap at Tis. 175. over 18 months ago, and expressed the opinion that they had touched bottom then, the correctness of his judgment being proved by the quotations. between 30th September, 1902, and the 30th June, 1903. It was about that time that the Pembrokeshire dungle (to put a charitable con- struction on the directors' action) and the rapid rise in exchange caused a sudden and serious decline, of which the already too patent direc tors have no doubt taken all advantage possible Tundersigned have been favoured with appointed hour. in order to further strengthen their position. Does he think they are worth any less now ? 1 think not, and it would be interesting to know who has been buying most heavily Istely of this absurdly cheap gilt-edged stock.
To the Editor, The China Gazette, Dear Sir,-In your issue of the 16th ander the above caput I looked for fight but found sque. It can hardly be called an examina tion" of any stock simply to re-quote the prices paid at the end of each month for a couple of years. What Shanghai wants very badly is a financial critic who can and will examine the Marks for the public and give the world the benefit of his investigations and advies. It would be a blessing in investors also if such legislation as was found necessary in Hong. kang a few years ago could be enforced at Shanghai, in order to put a stop to the dis. graceful gambling which has been going on of fate in the en-styled "short sales" line. This is no more nor less than the sale of shares by some nae, who in most cases bas nai got them in some one else who also never sees them and does not rare whether they exist There bogus sales are mostly effected by the brokers to some confiding speculater, ie, gambler. He promises to take up, the scrip on a certain date at a certain price, the price being of coune higher than the market price of the day. In order to deliver such shares at date and make a profit on them the bral er tries to get them as cheap as he can, ie. he is directly interested in persuading some, body, who probably trusts him more than is wise, to part with scrip at a lower figure than he knows he is going to get from his forward purchaser and various devices are resorted to in o der to persuade his friend and constituent that it is unwise to hold his stock any longer that he had better get out even at a small loss, Timid holders are those who suffer chiefly, though others also feel the effect of 'bearing or depressing movement on the part of un- scrupulous brokers; that is to say it causes instability as to their own financial standing on the part of all holders, if their investments are artificially, Le, arifully depressed. They may be content with a small rate of interest, say, 6 or 7 per cent. In a good solid concern and pay a price for shares which should ensure such return on their investment, when suddenly shareholders of the Osaka Shosen Kaisha on At the general half-yearly meeting of the a bearing movement takes place and down go the 22nd ult., the profit for the hall-year just their securities in value, They cannot realize ended was declared at 860,517 yen. Of this if they would, and if they reed money they find, sum, 182,000 yen was placed to the reserve for perhaps, that the banks will not advance at all, insurance, 202,000 yen to the reserve for repairs, or not sufficient for their purposes, and that 198,roo yen was written off for depreciation, they would have done better to leave shares and 14,000 yen placed to the legal reserve. A alone and their money in the bank. This feel-dividend was declared at the rate of to per Ing ie, of course, very bad for public enterprises of any kind and is more often than not quite unwarranted by cricumstances and brought about by the unscrupulous methods of brokers who must do business somehow or another in order to make ends meet.
Pembrokeshire job was a piece of gross mis- Everyone knows that the loss of the
management on the part of the directors, so conspicuously foolish was it as almost to make suspicious people believe that it was done with intent to provoke distrust and bear down the holders. These methods are well known in stock for the deliberate benefit of the big
other countries and there are indications that Shanghai is no exception. [We, of course, en- tirely dissent from this view.-ED., C. G.] ·
My humble advice to investors is Don't scare any over Docks, for however mismanaged, they are paying handsome dividends on face value and are worth a lot more than they are quoted

Now as I have had no dealings in Langkats and don't intend to, and being principally in terested in S. C. Farnham, Royd & Co., Ltd., propose to take Mr. Nielsen to task, as a broker, for the statement that the shares of a gilt-edged security such as 'Farnhams' are not worth more than 20 taels a share for leo face value. Mr. Nielsen admits that the company is doing

He omitted to note that they put 100,000 taels 19 reserve out of their net earnings, and that the previous year they put 750,000 to reserve. What rate of interest does Mr. Nielsen consider money safely invested in Shanghai should earn? If an investor, in slack times with Docks, can get 15 per cent. on co taels, is he not justified in paying more than 130 taels for too tsels worth of that scrip? It may be remunerative to Mr. Nielsen and some of his confreres to go round town talking bash to those who are fools enough to swallow it, but I should not think it would do him-as a (would-be) business man —any good to affix his name to such balder dash in print, and if he can't supply more sen sible financial comments than he has done in your issue of the 16th inst. I advise him to, in future, refrain from spreading himself in print.
