These theatres have an average andsence each evening of about two thousand spectators, and it requires but a short visit to realise that the means of exit provided in the establishments is altogether insufficiom. It may perhaps be invoked that, because in Chinese Cheatres little use is made of inflammable scenery and the accessories and machinery necessary to a European stage, danger of fire in native play-houses is minimised. An excursion into the crowded dressing rooms, lumber rooms and offices, situated at the back of the platform, will enlighten the uninitiated as to the fallacy of this baseless theory. The (35 actors, supers, musicians and their friends are crowded into the must restricted of areas. An agglomeration of wooden and paper ac cessories, and dowdy costumes are scattered about pell-mell, and in the heterochite crowd of artists and hangers-on, who joke and gibe, hustle round and clamber over each other, every second man is smoking.
