The year has been a record one as regards pepper. Numbers of new gardens have been opened and the vines in many recently planted gardens have come into bearing. The total export of black and white pepper has, we believe, reached the amount of 60,coopicals. When we consider the pepper and gold indus. tries, the sago manufacture and generally the volume of the commerce of the State, the com parison recently made between the progress made here and in a neighbouring country is hardly understandable. The Chinese popula tion is steadily increasing year by year, a sure sign that substantial progress is being made.
