Mr. Pritchard Margan, Consul-General for stated that a neighbour who had been cured of ONE SIMPLEX PIANO PLAYERS Corea, interviewed by the Exchange Company, said, in reference to the statement that Japan is sending troops to Corca as a supposed countermove to the failure of Russia to eva- cuate Manchurin, that-doubtless the Japanese, if they were doing anything, were protecting their own interests in Corea She was at the present time engaged in building a railway between Fusan and Seoul, Fusio being practically the nearest point to Japan, with an

concessions, and in addiiton, he believed, a timber concession, and in common with other countries possessing Treaty rights with Corea, mining concessions.
Bearing in mind the vested interests of all the nationalities represented in Corea, onc would hope, if not схрест, that she should receive the protection of all civilised Powers, and that she should re- main an independent and neutral State, and become, as she ought to be, the Belgium of the Ear East. At the same time, if the Powers did wol interfere to protect the interests of the Corean Empire, Japan would unques› tionably fight Russia for it, even if single. handed, because to lose Corea, which was an overflow country for Japan's growing popula. tion, would be to Japan most disastrous, and reduce her to the position of a very small Power in the East. Mr. Pritchard Morgan pointed out that when Corea became a separate kingdom after the Japanese War, the Emperor of Corea was advised that it would be in the interests of bis country if ally countries having Treaty rights with him were to receive conces. sions, which would put them in the position of having vested interests in the country, and thus to some catent afford protection for Corea.

The first mining concession granted was to Americans, and since then Germans, Japanese, FROM English, and French bad all obtained areas for mining. The mining interests in Corca were of special value. The American mines give employment to soula 420 Coreans, and considerable British capital was embarked in the American ventures by some of the lead-gends from alongside
ing South African magnates, who, with their labour difficulties in South Africa, appreciated the value of labour at from 7åd. to ts. 3d per day for best artisans, so that the company might be regarded as an Anglo-American un- dertaking, although an American company. British mines which had a predominance of English capital, embarked in the undertaking had 1,000 Coreans at work. To give some idea of importance of the American mines they had 200 head of stamps at work, and had paid during the present year about £200,000 is dividends. All these mining areas were of immense proportions, and the British company would commence producing guld at the end of this month.
re-
The timber industry in Corca was of considerable importance, and there was sufficient to supply the whole of the quirements of the East. The agricultural in terests, especially commencing at the south west and going up the valley of the Seoul, were of great impo tance, and the finest rice in the world was being grown and exported to other countries, particularly Japan and China. Indeed, so superior was the rice that sufficient money was paid for it to cover the cost of transit to Japan and China, and import cheaper and inferior rice to supply food forthe Coreans. The cattle in Corca were proba' ly the finest in the world, and their hides were competed for by every nationality. It was worthy of note that the British had a concession for building a railway from Mekpo, which was also an ex- ceedingly fine port, to Senul, and this railway' would traverse this rich agricultural country,—— Ex.
SAPING A CHILD,
A LITTLE ENGLISH HEROINE.
Lily Pearson, the pretty eight year old child
of a loving mother, is, says a Manchester paper, the heroine of an incident that has aroused interest.
"From a baby," said her mother, who lives at 37, Park-street, Greenheys, Manchester, "Lily was pale and thin-Dr. Williams' pink pills for pale people gave her the rosy health she now has. Two years ago she had scarlet fever. She didn't seem to pick up after it. Bottle after battle of medicine had been given

her. Then I tried Dr. Williams' pink pills, and am glad that I did so. I soon noticedra difference in her health. She surprised every- one. She had more colour, and was beginning to eat as a healthy, growing child should. She continued to take the pills, with the result that it would be hard to find a stronger girl than she in all Manchester at the present time."
Here is one of the many cases in which Dr.
Williams' pink pills for pale people the genuine pills, not a sham or substitute, but Dr. Williams-have made a new being of a suffer ing, anemic invalid. Thousands of airong men and women who were, once miserable weaklings, owe their health to the same remedy Anamiz, bila, consumption, tits, gout, head. ache, Indigestion, kidney disease, paralysis, rheumatism, St. Vitus dance, have all been cured after all other treatment proved fatile.
