HAMBURG'S GIANT GORILLA.
There has just been placed on exhibition în' the Umlaff Museum at Hamburg, Germany, the biggest known specimen of gorilla. It was shot in the Cameroons territory in West Africa. | After much difficulty is was removed to Hamburg, stuffed, mounted, and placed on exhibition. It measured 6ft. 10 in. from the crown of the head to the middle toe and across from middle finger to middle finger 9ft 38in. It was largely a matter of chance that the 'commercial traveller, Herr Paschen, of Scherwin, shot this gigantic gorilla. When the natives came to the agency at Cameroons with stories of the "big monkey," Herr Faschen did❘ not take much stock in the accounts. But when the natives started out on a big hunt for the gorilla, the German took his carbine and went along. After some hours' travel they came to the patch of bush where the gorilla was supposed to be hiding. The natives sur rounded the bush, and suddenly the beast's head appeared.
Herr Paschen made a path through the bush with his bush knife, and when It was a within range took aim and fired. lucky shot, for the beast at once fell with a bullet through its head. It fell with à crash, and was almost instantly dead. It was not an easy matter to remove the porilla to the coast, and to Hamburg ; but there it is now, almost life-like in appearance so carefully was the stuffing and mounting done.-Ex.

WHOSE FAULT IS TT1
The world is full of disease and pain. Whose fault is it? Everybody's; therefore often the fault of the sufferers themselves. But the pressing question is,-what to do, how to relieve, how to cure. What would become of us if means were not found to destroy disease? Why,, of the course, disease would destroy, us and the world would be de populated. Until we learn how to prevent disease, we must be thankful for the means of abating and curing it after it has seized upon us, and stands, like a savage with uplifted axe, ready to take our lives. Especially do we need some sure and speedy from of treatment for those complaints which are universal,-~- which arise in every country and climate, and ravage poor humanity at all seasons of the year, We allude to such ailments, as Nervous. and General Debility, Hysteria, Scroful, Chronic Diarthes, Asthma, Throat and Lung Complaints, Blood Impurities, and the ills of
women and children; For these

Dr. J. L. Carrick says: "I have had. remarkable success with it in the treatment of Consumption, Chronic Bronchitis, Catarrh and Scrofulous Affections.. It is of special value in nervous prostration and depraved nutrition It stimulates the appetite and the digestion, promotes assimilation, and enters directly

Dr. Josiah Oldfield, the secretary of the Society for the Abolition of Capital Punish- ment, proposes to substitute for the death penally what he terms 'spiritual hospitals' for murderers. This strange panacea for crime was brought forward at the annual meeting of the society at the Holborn Restaurant last month, Hanging, Dr. Oldfield said, could be proved to have never acted as a deterrent of crime. Rome rose to her greatest grandeur after the abolition of capital punishment. In THAND ELECTRIC COMPANY, Elizabethan times, when hundreds were executed annually, crine flourished just the same. What was the alternative to capital punishment? The answer was: "Hos- pitals for the spiritually diseased," where criminals could be kept and attended by "nurses and clergy until they had recovered their moral health. For this treatment a new profession of "spiritual therapeutics" must be founded. Bir Edmund Verney echoed Dr. Oldfield's sentiments, and said hanging could not act as a deterren! when only one in nine murderers went to the gallows, and only one in five was punished at all.
