Dai ing that terrible monili, when the soul of a great nation was wrung with the awful an- guish of suspense, it was with difficulty that the devoted wife could be induced to leave the bedside of our future Sovereign even to receive the nourishment and take the rest so necessary to her own existency, The following pathetic little letter written by Princess Alexandra to the Vicar of St. Mary Magdalene's, Sandringham, shows the state of her mind during this crisis in her life: "My husband being, thank God, somewhat better, I am coming to church. In every public clarity, in every movement for the relief of the suffering poor that has been organised in the United Kingdom during the past forty years Her Majesty has taken a leading part. Her devotion to the people of the land of her adoption has been whole hearted and infatigable. Speaking to Mlle. Helené Vacaresco, at Malborough House in 1891, shortly after the death of our late Sovereign, Her Majesty said-- "Now a great duty has fallen upon me, a great task is set before any soul. Ah! if love could render people happy and content, I am stire all the English would be happy

The distinctive tint was pink to which the brilliant unitorns of army and naval officials added a striking con- trast. The band of the Sherwood Foresters was scarcely seen at first sight, but following the strains of music being wafted from a grove of palms, the red coats of the men, under Bandmaster Bradley, were ob served in a corner of the room communi- cating with both halls Potted plants and pahus eliminated all corners, while stacks of flags marked off the window recesses.

There are some Princesses and reigning Queens, are there not, who ever feel themselves strangers in the lands that be comes theirs by marriage?
