INSURANCE IN JAPAN.

BRUS ELS, 3rd September. A recent report by the Belgian Consul- General at Yokohama contains some interest. ing particulars concerning foreign insurance companies in Japan, of which there are 77 in number, mostly branches of Furopean and American concerns.. Yokohama alone boasts of 55, 36 being for fire insurance, 18 for ship- ping insurance, six for life, and five for fire and shipping insurances. At Kobe there are to be found four agencies and at Osaka two. There exis', of course, niso Japanese companies covering all these risks.

An Imperial decree issued in 1900 stipulated that at the discretion of the Government foreign insurance companies working in Japan could be compelled to deposit with the Treasury certain guarantee finds in cash or in State securities, ccordingly, the representatives of

thesa foreign concerns have now been requested to deposit by October 31 next with the Bank of Japan a sum of 100,000 yen each. For life insur ance companies this amount is being increased, should the legal reserve required for their busi- ness in Japan exceed 100,000 yen. As japanese companies are not bound by these restrictions, and have to deposit-bút 2;,000 yen, the foreign companies expressed their grievance to their re spective Embassies. The Mikado's Govern ment, however, replied that with regard to the national concerns they could easily be dealt with by Japanese law, which would be diffi-
