THE STRAITS CURRENCY.
Referring to the currency scheme at the half- vearly meeting of the Singapore Chamber of Commerce, the Chairman, Mr. W. H. Frizell,
id:--
pablished drawing attention to certain dangers An able memorandum has recently been
that may arise, These views deserve the earnest consideration of the Chamber, as they emanate from one who has seriously studied the subject. The trade of the "Hinterland" is without doubt mast important to the colony, and I trust the Government will take steps lo counteract those dangers by admitting within the influence of the scheme if so desired, British North torneo, Sarawak,, and the States on the East Coast of the Malay Peninsula. It will be bone in mind the large amount of Straits capital epresented by imports of various kinds is dispersed through those countries, which have hitherto had a community of currency with us. The prohibition of the importation of the Bri tish dollar and Mexican may therefore involve dangers to those traders and dealers, through causes over which they have no control. On the other hand the wider policy of admission would enlarge the orbit of the new currency, and lead to a greater utilisation of the new coin.

A petition asking for a Royal Commission to inquire into the truth of these matters was for warded on April 8 last to the Secretary of State for the Colonies, through the Governor here Sir Henry Blake, who was quite in accord with it.
