THE BURMAH OIL INDUSTRY.

WONDERFUL PROGRESS.

The Burmah Oil. Co., during the past few years, have been making enormous develop. ments and extensions, and is now mpidly becoming one of the largest oil producers in the world. Uptill a few years ago it supplied only a small proportion of the requirements of barn- ing oil of Burmah. Now it supplies practically the whole of that country, its imports to Calcutta have exceeded, in the past two or three months, the total imports of all foreign oils, it is ship- ping oil largely to Madras, Bombay, Karnachee, and other Indian coast ports, and also to the Straits where it is competing with Sumatran oil As against the total estimated consumption in India, of about 110,030,020 gallons, it is now producing about 45,000,000 gallons annually, and, before long, it will be in a position to supply all the requirements of this country, if nat to export to Europe, as developments and extensions are still going on at a rapid pace. The Company have three, tank steamers, built to their own designs, constantly ronning between Rangoon and Calcutta, and a fourth, one of a capacity of about 4,500 tons, to be employed in Bombay trado, is just approaching completion. In addition to these, they ́employ a number of other vessils for carrying their tinned oil to other ports. They
