VOX SIELLARUM I

The stars in their courses have but few secrets from Old Moare. Indeed, there seems to be but one matter of importance on which they' are dumb. This is the name of next years Derby winner. With regard to practically everything chic affecting the national welfare, however, they are as communicative as one could wish, and a parusal of the newly-issued "Almanack" for 1904 will give the purchaser quite as much information as he can reasonably expect concerning the happenings of the com. ing year. In addition to this, the seer offers his patrons. "Friendly Advice to the Suffering," "Directions to the Farmer and Gardener," A Prophetic Hieroglyphic," and a list of "For- unate Days." The man who wants more than this for bis penny is a glutton, remarks a writer in the "P.M. Gazette.

ONLY TO FORTUNATE DAYS IN 1904. 'Taking it all round, the year 1904 does not afford "Old Moore "much satisfaction. The general tone of his predictions is gloomy in the extreme. Wars and rumours of wars, interual dissensions, shipwrecks, fires, railway collisions, and financial disasters are freely foreseen. Indeed, from January to December he can recognize but to "fortunate" days, or, on an average, nine and à decimal per month.

To his trained eye a glance at the crystal reveals a series of depressing pictures. Thus, on page 5, he sees England as "a mighty ship in full sail, on the sails ominous words; rocks are ahead, and the ship is unmanageable--this means that a Nation of Shopkeepers groaning under taxation are going to ruin." Poverty, ton, is to be widespread, a condition of affairs which leads the prophet to ask, "Oh, Shylock House Farmer, how can you drag such cruel rents from the poor workers ?" How, indeed! And does the designation "Shylock House Farmer" by any chance mask the personality of somebody in Downing-street? It is only when South Africa Rashes"across the crystal's depths that anything really encouraging is brought to light, for then, the seer. has a pleasant vision of." Briton and Boer intermarry ing." with the subsequent appearance on the scene of "little toddlers with John Bull faces !

JUPITER, FINANCE, AND INFLUENZA. The forecast for January opens thus:- "Right high in the leavens shines the res plendent Jupiter, the star of fortune and good luck." Yet, despite this, "our old enemy, the induenza, will still be busy among us there will be a good deal of unrest in com- mercial centres, and securities will fluctuate widely." Altogether the vaunted power of the "resplendent Jupiter" to avert disaster seems to be over-rated. With regard to the weather at the beginning of the year "Old Moore" has reason to believe that there will be a good deal of wind and rain. The timely hint should in- dace people to refrain from buying panamas and supshades until a little later in the year.

In Febuary it seems that Saturn is to cust Jupiter from the premier position in the skies, a circumstance which spells general misfortune. "Let there be no mistake about it," declarea the expert, Old England will be in trouble and danger this month." Going into details, be observes that "the affliction, of fair Venus threatens a scandalous exposure in our Divorce Court," and that "Germany is likely to give us trouble."

March is to be comparatively uneventful, although "men's minds will be excited," as is also to prove the case in both April and May. In the latter month, however, a shock of earth. quake" is hinted at in addition, while it is further predicted that "French and English troops will fight side by side as they have done before." More precise details are not vosch. safed.

THE 16TH OF JUNE,

The half-year closing in June ends inauspi- clously. It seems that the new moon on the 13th of the month is to be responsible for the occurrence of "grave complications in connec tion with our foreign policy.

The

friends of England," darkly declares "Old Moore," "will prove false ones." The lot of those whose birthday falls on the 19th is unhappy, for the planets show the trained observer that such as these “will meet with equalls in their business and domestic affairs which for a time appear overwhelming "I

July and August promise rather better, but the solar eclipse which the prophev's gifts en- able him to foresee as taking place on Septem- ber 9 is to cause much mischief," In Octo ber "the winds will be let loose and will howl and blow over land and sea” ̈ They are to do so in November as well, with the result that "collisions and miscalculations will lead to a watery grave for many brave and fearless Bouls,"

THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, 1903.

taken in regard to that vital question of aliens,

who come to this country in'swarms, unprovided with the necessary means whereby they can obtain even a scany living."""

A boom in Christian science, an outbreak of

amali-pox, and a tremendous explosion in Liverpool are among the incidents promised for August, but Canada comes to the rescue with some wonderfully good news for Septem- ber, and City men are asked to believe that the Stock Exchange will be busy in October.

TIENTSIN.

(From Our Own Correspondent,}

TIENTSIN, August z6th, Everything is very quiet and dull bere just now, the only thing is occasional arrest or accusation and the most absurd reports. In

Peking they appear to be Kang Yu-wei mad. He is seen first here then there; he is blamed for each and every trouble as it rises, even to the Southern rebellion, which the well-informed Government now declares cannot be dealt with till Kwang Yu-wei is arrested. All this fras has suggested the following horrid doggiel, it being the silly season:--

GET KANG YU-WEI ARRESTED.

Things are shocking in the city, We can neither buy nor sell.

If we only could do one thing,

Then the trade might go on well. Such a little thing it is, too, As usually attested,

A little puny order, “ Get Kang Yu-wei arrested I "

There is trouble in the Palace, There is panic in the schools; There are endless secret mandates, And the most conflicting rules. But the upshot of the story Being repeatedly attested,

Is the one thing most desired, "Get Kang Yu-wei arrested."

There's a big rebellion spreading, In Kwangtung we've heard it said, And a big reward is offered For every rebel head.

But the miserable story

Is only half digested

In Peking where all we hear is "Get Kang Yu-wei arrested."

Kang Yu-wei it is who's guilty Of the trade all falling down,

And Kwang Yu-wei's the reason for Each rebel captured towa Kang Yu-wei's the culprit For offences great and small, And it's Kang Yu-wei, the Tascal That they can't arrest at all.
