THE AUSTRALIAN ISLANDS.
A NEW, PEOPLE.
Mr. Charles Hedley, F. L. S., conchologist, of the Australian Museum, Sydney, has just re- turned home from a tour of exploration in the Gulf of Carpentaria, as the guest of Dr. Roth, the Northern Prosector of Aborigines. Me Hedley has a big collection of shells, fishes, native implements, and other objects of scien- tific value, and he is of the opinion that some of the biological specimens are new to science. Until he can make examination, and go into research, however, he cannot be specific but at all events a percentage of them are discove ries. Moreover, Dr. Rath, whose guest he was, and he were the first white inen, so far as they could learn, who had ever been upon Morning. ton Island, one of the Wellesley Archipelago, at the southern extremity of the Gulf of Carpen- taria, since Captain Matthew Flinders discover ed the group, when surveying and mapping the Gulf in 1852, Flinders-discovered that island, but there does not seem to be any record that he landed upon it; so Dr. Roth and his companion were almost certainly the fi st whites to set foot upon it, and they were indubitably the first whites to explore its ten by forty miles. They found it quite thickly inhabited by blackfellows of a type somewhat different from those upon the mainland, in that they were of a lower grade.
Dr. Roth was upon his annual tour of the Gulf on the cutter Melbidir when Mr. Hedley was with him. From a scientific point of view, the chief result of the cruise was the determin. ation that the Gulf of Carpentaria is more closely associated in its fauna with the Indian Ocean than with the Pacific. Mr. Hedley found several typical Indian Ocean forms in the Gulf, such as conch shells, which had not previously been found so far to the east, or in Queensland waters. The inhabitants of Morn- ington Island are an interesting people, scientifically speaking. They had, with but one exception, a man who seemed to have visited the mainland once, and who may have Been Englishmen, no knowledge whatever of whites. Their modes of living and general characteristics show that they have been separated from the mainland natives for many generations. The one exception just spoken of was conspicuous from his hastily donning some leaves (cf. Adam and Eve's figleaf aprons), when Dr Roth and Mr. Hedley appeared in the vicinity, which was proof, they thought, that he had learned some vague notions about clothes upon the main land, barely possibly in the neighbourhood of His Burketown--but that is problematical. fellow-islanders, men and women alike, were clothed in puris naturalibus, one and all of them. The "tame" blacks with Dr. Ruth upon the cutter, some of them inission boys-- for Dr. Roth and Mr. Hedley spent a short time at the Mapoon, Mission, Batavia River, York Peninsula-could converse with the islanders with comparative ease. The "lame" blacks were acquainted with the native dialeci prevalent about Burketown, and the dialect spoken by the islanders is akin to that, it ap pears, although, after all, the Australian blacks speak a Kanguage with few dialectic character- istics..
Dr. Roth intends to write a full account of these Mornington islanders, which should be He and Mr. engaging to all ethnologists. Hedley spent three days on the island, and With they camped on it a night or two. them were the tame" blacks already men- tioned, whom they utilised as guides and acouts. The two gentlemen exercised caution, being always armed, and whenever they with the black boys - advanced it was

Roth's "tame" blacks discovered; immediately upon their coming into communication with them. Thus.one of the islanders would not talk at all to ena of Dr. Roth's blacks because
he was his "father-in-law." Only members of the tribe belonging to the same class are al- lowed to marry, and much to the amusement of Dr, Roth and Mr. Ledley, they found an island woman flirting with one of their "boys" with great ardour, she having found out that he and she belonged to the same class, and she could, therefore, wed him if he was willing.

A FOOLISH OLD IDWA
It was once thought that a medicine was all the more beneficial for having a-nasty taste and smell. We now know that such an idos is perfect nonsense. There is no more: reason why medicine should offend the, senses, than why food should do so.. "Therefore, one of the greatest chemical victories of the past few years is what we may call the redemption of cod liver oil. Everybody knows what a vile taste and smell this drug has in its natural The island was fairly well explored by the state. No wonder most people declare they two gentlemen, though not completely. The island abounded in kanga TOOS and other game. Dr. Roth and Mr. Hed ley could sometimes see upon the mainland in the distance clouds of emoke, which was a sign without doubt that the natives had fired the bush to drive out the kangaroos... It was rather a coincidence, Dr. Roth and Mr. Hedley thought, that Flinders makes note of having seen like smoke clouds while occupied in his charting of the Golf.

WAMPOLE'S PREPARATION the desired miracle is wrought, and, we have the valuable part of the oil, without the other. This effective modern remedy is palatable as honey and contains the nutritive and curative properties of Pure Cod Liver Oil, extracted by
us from fresh cod livers, combined with the Compound Syrup of Hypophosphites, and the Extracts of Malt and Wild Cherry. The palate accepts it as it does sugar, confectionery or cream, Taken. before meals it goes to the very secret stronghold of digestive disorders: prevents and cures Nervous Dyspepsis, Anemia, Throat and Lung Troubles and all diseases due to impurity of the blood. Dr. G. C. Shannon, of Canada, says: "I shall con- tinue its use with, I am sure, great advantage to my patients and satisfaction to myself."

many of them, but few had boomerangs. But far from showing hostility, they generally ran away whenever the white men came near them, like so many rabbits. Through the aid of the "tame" blacks, and some small presents, some of them were induced to make friends with the two explorers, who found them curiously stolid and matter-of-fact for savages who had never before laid eyes upon any product of civilisa- tion. They took Dr. Rath and Mr. Hedley and their actions pretty much as in the natural order of things. When Dr. Roth and Mr. Hedley lit their pipes, these wild nativesans casually observed, so the "tame" natives said, "Why, they're burning theinic'yes." Lighting a fire with a match, and boiling water in a "billy," were almost equally trifling incidents. A lot of penny whistles; which Mr. Hedley had fetched up from Sydeny, tickled their souls, and directly the toys were distributed the bush in one part of Mornington Island at least resounded with sounds never heaid before since the world began. Mr. Hed'ey produced some clasp knives, and showed one of the islanders how it was pos- sible to whittle with it, and how to snap the blade back and forth. The blackfellow insisted on scraping with the blade as if it were his familiar sea shell, instead of cutting with it, and when it came to clasping the blade to, be started to sex bis finger upon the edge. Mr. Hedley caught the hand fust in time to prevent a badly cut Mornington Island Anger,

The islandars do not know what canoes are, but their water craft are simply rude rafts, consisting of two logs, and some light wood, which they paddle about.
