TERRIBLE STORM AT CHEFOO.
MANY KILLED. ENORMOUS DAMAGE.
From recent issues of the Shangkat Times we call the following items of news:-
Chefoo, July 17.-Chefoo is a stricken city. For the past twenty-four hours she has been captive and within the deadly grip of one of the most disastrous floods known in the history. of this section of China. To-night, the city is plunged in total darkness. Her streets are covered to a depth of several feet with a fast running flood of murky water. Hundreds of buildings and dwellings are intindated.
Thou-
sands of people are rendered bomeless. Rumours are flying thick and fast telling of great less of life and property. The damage to the city of Chefoo will be tremendous, and at the time it is impossible to give anything like an
accurate estimate.
Rain, in torrents, has fallen over this section and at times has risen almost to the fury of a cloudburst. The billsides surrounding the nitive city readily assisted in causing the storm Aoud to run down in veritable rivers to the low lying districts below. About the only portion of the city that has escaped the ravages of the flood is that section lying upon the high lands upon which are located the various consulate buildings and saveral schools and convents.
The little inoffensive creek which flows within the native settlement, and which is the
waler course draining the valley, is now a wild and relentless torrent, almost a mile in with. The portion of Chefoo bordering upon this stream is very closely built up, and compact.
It is here that the flood hardone the greatest amount of damage. Volumes of water running with the force of a mighty mill race have swept everything before it. Where this stream flows into the sea, great havoc was created among the small craft moored in the harbour From all parts of the city comes news of many persons losing their lives by drowning. While few bodies have been re- covered, many have been seen floating upon the surface of the flond, on their way out to the open sea.
The food situation is growing desperate. An effort is being made to care for the host of poor who have been rendered homeless. Tem- porary shelter has been sected wherever it can be found. Several godowns in the business district are under water and valuable merchan- dise is believed to be hopelessly ruined.
Busi- ness hongs driven out by the food have been obliged to seek quarters in a higher part of the town. In some sections of the city the water is so deep that ponies are compelled to swim. All traffic is suspended, and is a very difficult matter to secure communication with the out. side world. The water is now at a standstill, and indications are that the rin will cease.
July 28.-Chefon was visited by a terrific thunderstorm Sunday forenoor, followed by a cloudburst on the mountain side.
Fearful torrents of water, without warning. rushed down the ravines sweeping away every- thing in them and along the banks of the streams.
Three thousand native buildings are estimat
ed to have been destroyed.
The loss of life among Chinese residents in the flooded district is believed to be from five hundred to one thousand souls.
One American sailor is known to have been last."
A Chinese inn, with fifty-three inmates, also a school with fourteen boys and a teacher have been carried into the raging sea.
East and west of the city the beach is strewn with dead bodies and wreckage.
Damage to properly i conservatively estimated at over taels 1,003,00. The loss to foreign hongs is considerable but not serious,
The various consular bodies were to meet to-day to raise funds for the sufferers.

THREE THOUSAND BUILDINGS LAID WASTE,
Chefon July 28,-Reports of terrible loss of life and vast destruction of property continue to' come to light from the flooded rlistrict of Chefoo.
While earlier estimates have placed the list of dead anywhere between five hundred and one thousand persons, the faller figure is now believed to be more nearly correct.
The waters, which filled the valley, formed by the three ranges of hills surrounding Chefoo, bave now sufficiently receded, that`some idea of the true extent of the damage wrought by the flood can become known. The storm has laid waste, farms and garden, rice paddies and homesteads. While the storm was of brief duration the work f disaster was none the less sure and certain. Three thousand build. ings in the native settlement are now laid waste. The destruction wrought is of such extent that it will take year of hard toil to replace the structures wiped away by the flood. The loss to buildings and merchandise alone has been figured up by insurance adjusters to the largò sum of one million taels,
The matter of relief for food sufferers is a pertinent question at this time in Chefoo.
The Consular bodies, representing every foreign power having interests in Chefoo, met

said Lord Chatham, is a plant of slow growth." People believe in things that they see, and in a broad sense they are right. What is sometimes called blind faith is not faith at all. There must be reason and fact to form a foundation for trust In regard to a medicine or remedy, for example, people ask, "Has it cured others? Have cases like mine been relieved by it? Is it in harmony with the truths of modem science, and has it a record above suspicion? If so, it is worthy of! confidence; and if I am ever attacked by any [869e of the maladies for which it is commended
shall resort to it in full belief in its power to held me." On these lines
THE Attention of Householders is drawn THE the fact that stagnant pools and collections of water in broken flower pots, broken jars, &c. standing in their premises are & source of danger to people residing therein, and to wam them that the Sanitary Board MAR-Intend to treat such as nuisances.
