WE are indebted to an influential home journal for the information that "despair reigns among our people in the Far East," regarding the Manchurian question. One of the follies of youth was illustrated at the Supreme Court this morning; when Francis Lenry Barnes altended before the Chief Justice for his public exammation in bankruptcy, During his examination by Mr. Brace Shep- herd, the official receiver, it appeared that several years sincs debtor and a Mr. M, H. Baptista guaranteed a loan of $1,200 on beball of a man named Allinson, who was a foreman in the Ordnance Department, where Barnes was engaged as a clerk. It seems evident that Hongkong will escape the typhoons which have been hovering on the coast for some days past. At half-past five this morning the black south cone was lowered and the red drum, indicating a typhon more than 300 miles to the east of the Colony, was hoisted. The Acting Director of the Observa-
