INOCULATION IN THE

PUNJAB

SOME INTERESTING STATISTICS.

THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, FRIDAY, JULY 24, 1903.

Indies, Mauritius, and other places, and of late the population has had quite a noticeable leavening of cosmopolitanism. The island is particularly clean and healthy, and a visit to the place is well worth the trouble of any one

who can afford the time.

There are said to be about 12,000 islets in

the group, and the Sultan, who is of ancient lineage, bears the curious title of King of Twelve Thouand Isles and Thirteen Atolls," Females are not precluded from succession to the Sultanate in this kingdom of lotus-catera, and the history of the country bears in bold relief the names of two famous Sultanas who were great figures in the Indian Ocean in

their respective times.~P.M.G.

We stated lately-say's the Plonter-that #statistics were being prepared showing the in- cidence of plague among the inoculated and non-inoculated in the Punjab during the cold weather. These statistics are new before us, and it must be admitted they are remarkable, though their accuracy is not above question in view of the fact that they are gathered from antive subordinate sources. Altogether twenty- three districts in the Province were involved in the epidemir, and the total population of the infected villages was 5,157.180. From October to May, both months inclusive, 311,829 plague cases with 186,400 deaths were reported. Al together 481,1qz inoculations were carried out, and among inoculated persons 5,051 plague cases with 1,333 deaths occurred. Now the Dotable result yielded by the examination of these figures is that among the non inocul ated, one man in every 15 contracted plague, whereas among the inoculated only one man in every 95 took the disease. Moreover, the incidence of deaths per cases, among the non-inoculated was 59 per cent. while among inoculated it was only 24 per cent. It has to be recognised, however, that these figures are not by themselves necessarily con- clusive. Even supposing them to be sub- stantially accurate, before the evidence can be regarded as proof a further statistical examina. tion, village by village, is necessary, and for that the figures before us furnish ne material. In the absence of the requisite details showing Lot the contrary, it is at any rate conceivable that in the particular village to which the 481,142 inoculations were confined, the plague inci dence may not have been greater among non inoculated than among inoculated. The state ments before us clearly show that whereas plague overspread twenty-three districts, ino Lot 4-All that piece of ground intended to

culation was limited to fourteen districts. What ought now to be shown in a separate statistical table is the incidence of plagne to inoculated and non-inoculated, district by dis- trict in the fourteen districts where inoculation. was carried on.-Times of India,

PIANO CLEARANCE SALE.

It is rarely that European travellers visit that -out-of-the-world group of coral-reefs and sand- pits known as the Maldives, and rarer still that any Maldivian should venture far abroad from his zephyr-swept home on the bosom of the Indian Ocean,. Each year, of course, according to the official arrangement made and provided. a Royal bungalow is sailed across the 500 miles Lot of ocean from Ma.é to Colombo, conveying the Sultan's representative chief, whose duly it is ta hand over the tribule and kow-tow to the Governor of Ceylon. Seldom does a Maklivian get further away from his coral home than Colombo, but the Sultan himself has lately come out of his shell in hot earnest, and travelled into far regions to a degree that shall win him fame in Malé almost rivalling that of the King of Serindib, The Sultan, the way, 1s'a very enlightened ruler, and has shown great civility and hospitality to English visitors to his group, recently felt it his duty to undertake the pilgrimage to Mecca. Then, having done his duty in the sacred places of Arabia, he went on ap to Cairo, where he was treated with every consideration, and shown everything that was likely to be of interest to him. Lord Cromer himself took the Sultan in hand for a time, introduced him to the Khe- dive's presence, and brought him into touch with most of the leading functionaries and others in Cairo. After a pleasant and informa- tive holiday beyond the gates of Bab-el-Mandeb, the Sultan has now sailed again for Colombo, on the way back to the sequestered Maldives.

Now that communication between Colombo and Malé has become more regular than formerly, there is no reason why travellers and naturalists in search of fresh ground should not turn their attention to the islands. The archipelago, which comprises no less than

under, seventeen groups of islets, carries a population THIS SEASON'S PIANOS, as
