THE CENSUS OF THE BOMBAY PRESIDENCY.

SOME NOTEWORTHY FACTS AND FIGURES.

The bulk of the population of the Bombay Presidency--over 78 per cent—is Himdu, while more than 17 per cent profess various forms of the Mussulman faith. Two per cent are Jains, and 0.8 per cent are Christians. It is notice- able that the number of persons returned as Christians during the last two decades has in- creased by 48 per cent and there are now very nearly three times as many nominal Christians as there are l'arsees. There has been an increase of my por cent amongst the Chr stians (during the decade} who now number 214,0 -- thronghout the Pre- sidency. Part of this increase may be attri butable to the carolment of about 5.00 ditional members of the Salvation Army and party to the relations which the various mis. sio ary dies has been able to establish with the latine wails in it cir rphanages, than to any general movement in the adult members of the non-Christian communies toward

accepting the revelation of the Gospel. In Bombay City alone they number 45,000. The Parsees $6,000

Ten years ago the Mahomedans formed 18.9 per cent. of the whole population of Bombay. At present they are 20,7 per cent. In the whole of the Presidency they number 4.567,000 a growth of over 100,000. This seeming spread of Mahomedanism is partly due to the increase in the number of inhabitants of Scinde where in limes of scarcity, when the cost of food rises, the lower classes of Hindus are prone to embrace the Moslem religion in order to share in the bounty dispensed by the rich Masjids.

The essential solidarity of the Mabomedan religion is such an impressive fact that casual observers are prone to overlook the tendency of its volaries to divide themselves into sects, and it would not fail to come as a surprise to many that a sect named the Ahmediyya bas been actually recently founded in India, which numbers. 10,000 followers in the Bombay Presidency, and if ambitious aims count for anything they are more than a sect. Their founder and leader is Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, Chief of Quadain, who claims to be a Messiah, He is a Messenger of l'eace. for he interly repudiates the doctrine of Jehad and forbids war for the propagation of reli ion and is not oblivious of the resources of civilization. This Mussulman Messiah claims to be to Islam what the founder of Christianity was to the faith of the Western world His

following is inconsiderable, but he is worth watching.

knowledge, but we have yet to learn the exact progress made by the creed of the twelve imams.

The Parsees of the Presidency number about 78,000, an increase of only 3 per cent in the decade. It is difficult to imagine how a hand. "ful of helpless and forlorn refugees from ancient. Persia, begging for shelter and religious toler ance from the fanaticism of the Arabs, at the hands of a petty Hinds Prince should bulk so disproportionately large before the world despite uncongenial surroundings. But to the credit of the Parsees be it said, they owe their influence of public life to their acute intellect and in- domitable perseverance and even their warst enemies cannot deny that it is entirely due to the benign British rule that it enjoys the proud position of one of the most advanced and pros perous communities in India. Yet it is to be feared that they are no longer as steadily in the -van of progress as they, once were. No race can stand al gaze: it must either go forward or drift backward. The extraordinary outburst of prosperity which infused such vigour and enterprise into the community in the first half of last century has long since spent itself; and while the sea of humanity about them sends forth an increasing number of competitors to contest their predominance in the learned profession and in commerce, the foundation of the past genuine greatness of the race are being sapped by an excess of luxury and egregious vanity Other communities," concludes the sympathe tic critic from whom we glean most of the particulars, "are outstripping the Parsees; with. in their own ranks lewer men of genuine pro. mise are appearing; many are losing hold of the old beliefs and finding nothing to replace them; and unless one or two Parsers of real genius arise to awaken their brethern to a consciousness of their diminishing oppor tunities, the impartial observer will fear for their future. Small communities are generally Intolerant of criticisms, but any Parsee of calm mind, who reflects upon the almost stationary aumerical position of his community, and who inquires into the esil results of consanguineous marriages cannot feel confident of the outlook, The points we have laid stress upon may not be admitted perhaps, but economic and physio- logical factors cannot be gainsaid.”

The TRANSFER BOOKS of the Company will be CLOS D from the 22nd to 38th instant, both days inclusive,

THE Osaka Asaki says that, according to an official investigation, the number of foreigners visiting Japan last year was 16,969, the amount of money spent by them during their sojourn in this country being estimated at Yen 15,226,585.
