The other two vessels will probably be deliver- ed during the present year. It was intimated in the last report that contracts had been made for three cargo steamers of 10,0-0 tons. The first two these vessels, namely, the Pera and Palermo, will probably be delivered about the same time in July or August, and the Palen The Carthage, not about three months later being any longer required for the mail service, has been sold in Bombay. The retura of troops no1nger required in South Africa has led to the discharge of five of the company's vessels since the date of the 1 st report. At the present mment there are four ships still engaged in this work. It was mentioned in the last repart that the directors had petitioned his Majesty in Cuncil for the grant of a fresh charter of in- corporation for the purpo e nf enabling the com- pany's general powers to be brought up more fully to the level of modern requirements. This important matter is still underthe consideration of the Treasury and the Board of Trade. The present contract for the conveyance of the India, China, and Australian mails terminates on Jan. 31, 1995, and the company has received the usual notice from the T'ostmaster-General to that effect. The company's mail steamers' are tak ng up their positions in the Tilbury Dock, while the non-mail steamers which run to Calcutta and China will continue their work in the Albert Dock as at present. Practically, therefore, one steamer will start from Tilbury and another from the Albert Dock every week. It is not known when the change of currency will be made, but the following Washington telegram to the Salt Lake Herald dated May 11th says, in this connection:-
Secretary Root, Mr. Ide of the Philippine commission, Mr. Edwards, of the insular bureau, and members of the monetary com- mission, held a conference to-day and discussed the Philippine money situation in ils relation to the operation of the new currency laws for the islands.
After the conference a cable message was sent to Governor Taft for his information, as follows:
report. The condition of affairs caused by the prolonged drought in the Australian colonies has been deplorable, while in India, though the crops have been favourable, the arrival of produce at the shipping ports bad been restricted, owing, in a great measu e, to the prevalence of plague both on the Bombay and the Bengal side of India. Now and then the freight prospects seem to point in the direction of an improvement, but the scale of rates, anticipated in the most favourable cir- cumstances, is lower than it has been for several years. The passenger traffic must be accounted satisfactory, as the figures for the. half-year show a modemte, improvement; but the changes recently made in the company's tariff, by the abolition of the 10 per cent. surtax and the modification in the return-ticket system, had, hardly begun in operate during the period to which this report refers, and these changes will discount to some extent any increase that may take place in current traffic. The coal contracts are more favour able than last year, but the general level of expenditure at all ports continues exceptionally high. The directors have declared an interim dividend on the preferred stock at the rate of five per cent. per annum, and on the deferred- stock at the rate of seven per cent. per
annum.
THE SPREAD AND PROPHYLAXIS OF PLAGUE,
In the discussion on plague during the American Medical Association Meeting, May 5th to 9th, Dr. W. J. Calvert stated that so long As such plague centres as Canto" and Hong-
kong existed, the disease was likely to appear in the Pacific coast of North America.
Dr. J. J. Kinyoun said th it the sixe qua non in prophylaxis was the accurate diagnosis of the first case, and that the clinical forms were so varied that errors in diagnosis of first cases were the rule. Plague might resemble anthrax, tonsilitis, mumps, diphtheria, erysipelas, pae.

teriological examination was essential.
Dr. F. G. Novy emphasised the fact that plague was essentially a disease of animals and primarily was not a human disease, The disease was transmitted by the bites of animals, such as the rats or rodents of China. How the discase was communicated to the human being, what was the portal of entry, was a very diffi- cult question to answer and possibly never would be answered satisfactorily. The virul ency of the germ decreased the longer it was kept in artificial culture. The organism he did not consider to be very résistent and could be easily destroyed," Besides isolation of the sick, disinfection, segregation, &c, he said we have a powerful method of controlling the disease, f, by seram inoculation,

WHOSE FAULT IS IT↑ The world is full of disease and pain. Whose fault is it? Everybody's; therefore often the fault of the sufferers themselves. But the pressing question is,-what to do, how to relieve, how to cure. What would become of us if means
were not found to destroy disease? Why,n, of the course, disease would destroy us and the world would be de populated. Until we learn how to prevent disease, we must be thankful for the means of abating and curing it after it has seized upon us, and stands, like a savage with uplifted axe, ready to take our lives. Especially do we need some sure and speedy from of treatment for those complaints which are universal,- which arise in every country and climate, and ravage poor humanity at all seasons of the year. We allude to such ailments as Nervous and General Debility, Hysteria, Screfuls, Chronic Diarrhea, Asthma, Throat and Lung Complaints Blood Impurities, and the ills of women and children. For these
WAMPOLE'S PREPARATION comes as near to being an actual specific as ny medicine yet discovered. It is palatable as honey and contains the nutritive and curative properties of Pure Cod Liver Oil, extracted by us from fresh cod livers, combined with the Compound Syrup of Hypophosphites and the Extracts of Malt and Wild Cherry. You may almost say that it is life itself em bodied in a single article made by human hands. Dr. J. L. Carrick says: "I have bad remarkable success with it in the treatment of Consumption, Chronic Bronchitis, Catarrh and Scrofulous Affections. It is of special value in nervus prostration and depraved nutrition. It stimulates the appetite and the digestion, promotes assimilation, and enters directly into the circulation with the food. I consider ait marvellous success in medicine." Every dose effective. "You cannot be disappointed in it." Sold by chemists here and throughout the world and A. S. Watson & Co., Limited.
