city of the world. This is the one fact that runs THE Undersigned have received instructions through the solid volume of "London Statistics" published by the County Council.

With six and a half million people, she has more than enough to populate Berlin, Chicago, Vienna, and St. Petersburg as they are now peopled and yet leave a prominent city behind. The great growth of population now steadily tends to be concentric. Once men left the city. for the suburbs now in turn they are beginning to leave suburbs for the Greater London, from Reading and St. Albans to Tunbridge Wells, where town imperceptibly is merged in country. The electric car for the poor and the motor for the well-train are without doubt introducing a

new

The most impressive thing about the statistics of London is the violent contrasts they present. There are nearly 130,000 paupers, 30,000 people live in common lodging-houses, and 726,000 dwell, in overcrowded rooms.. Yet the annual

value of house property for laxation purposes alone is over forty'milii s

A FOOLISH OLD IDEA.

It was once thought that a medicine was all the more beneficial for having a nasty taste and smell. We now know that such an idea

is perfect nonsense. There is no more reason why medicine should offend the senses than why food should do so. Therefore, one of the greatest chemical victories of the past few years is what we may call the redemption oj cod liver oil. Everybody knows what a vile taste and smell this drug bas in its natural state. No wonder most people declare they would rather suffer from disease than take cod liver oil, and the emulsions are quite as foul and abominable as the plain oil, no matter what may be nileged to the contrary. Now it

is one of nature's laws that a medicine which disgusts the nose and the palate, and also sickens the stomach, can have no good effect as a medicine; because the system revolts against it, and cries out to be delivered from it. In

WAMPOLE'S PREPARATION

Some of the facts are depressing. Pauperism from the CAPTAIN SUPERINTENDENT OF Compound Syrup of Hypophosphites and the

steadily rises. Our shipping declines. The heavy burden of the rates increases without ceasing, and the burden falls heaviest on the poorest districts. Thus St. George's, Hanover- square, pays 5s. sid. in the pound, while Bow pays 95, 5d.

AMUSEMENTS FOR 40,000,

Some of the figures, by their magnitude, lose their meaning. Thus it is difficult to realise the size implied by the statement that there are over two thousand miles of streets in the Caun- ty of London. One figure is smaller than

the desired miracle is wrought, and we have the valuable part of the oil, without the other. This effective modern remedy is palatable as honey and contains the nutritive and curative properties of Pure Cod Liver Oil, extracted by us from fresh cod livers, combined with the

Extracts of Malt and Wild Cherry. The palate accepts it as it does sugar, confectionery or cream. Taken before meals it goes to the very secret stronghold of digestive disorders: prevents and cures Nervous Dyspepsia, Anemia, Throat and Lung Troubles and all discases due to impurity of the blood. Dr. G. C. Shannon, of Canada, says: "I shall con- tinue its use with, I am sure, great advantage to my patients and satisfaction to myself." One Lot as all the virtues of cod liver oil; none of its faults. It was made to cure and it selle because it cures. One bottle convinces. Effective from the first dose. "It never dis appoints." One of the most entrancing chapters is found in the statement from the medical officer for London The birth-rate is below the average for the whole country, and is steadily declining. The birth-rate varies, too, almost exactly ac cording to the poverty of the district. St. Luke's, perhaps the poorest parish, has most births, and is immediately followed by St. George's-in the-East. Then come Mile End Old Town, Bethnal Green, and Southwark. At the top, with little more than a fifth of the births, pro- portionately, of the poorer parts, come St George's, ilanover-square, and 51. Ma.tin's-in- the-Fields.

When it come to deaths, the same proportion holds in the main. St George's, Southwark, and St. Luke's head the list. Hampstead has

the lowest death-rate, and judged by these returns is the healthiest part of London.

MR. JOHN BARRETT ON THE FAR EAST;

ASIATIC COUNTRIES TO BE WELL REPRE

SENTED AT ST. LOUIS FAIR.

Mr. John Barrett, former United States Minister to Siam, who for the last ten months has been in the Far Fast as Special Commis. sioner for the St. Louis Exposition, left Paris for London by way of The Hague. Before he left, the N. Y, Herald reports; Mr. Barret had an interview with the Minister for the Colonies in regard to the participation of French Indo-China in the Exposition.

Mr. Barrett returned to Paris a few days ago from Indin, where he saw the Coronation Durbar at Delhi. During the ten months he has been in the East he has travelled ex- tensively in Japin, Corea, Eastern Siberia, China, Siam, the Straits Settlements, Ceylon and India. He told me yesterday that Asiatic countries and colonies would make exhibits on a very extensive scale at the St. Louis Fair.

"Among the people visited," said Mr. Barrett yesterday, "I found a general apathy in regard to the Exposition, due largely to unfortunate experience with other World's Fairs, some of which were failures. I think that a general and, I might say, a very deep interest has been aroused. I urged that they should make what I called a thoroughly legitimate exhibition, in contrast with the Oriental 'midway' affair known at expositions of the last few years, so that Americans might have an opportunity of making a serious inspection of their products.

"It is likely that French Indo-China will make a very creditable exhibit at St. Louis. That country is a very close neighbour to the Philippines and there is great similarity between them in people and language, and to a certain extent both have the same sort of problems to face. The exhibition at Hanol was the greatest ever held in Asia, and I am trying to arrange to have part of it sent to St. Louis.

"I visited all the provinces of China in the course of my work, and the development there going on is tremendous. Wonderful strides in progress have been made in the East since I first saw it in 1894, and they are small compared to what will happen within the next ten years, "I found the Coronation Durbar at Delhi most interesting. One saw there things im- possible for words to represent accurately. There were about fifty. Americans among the visitors. It was a most impressive sight to see the one hundred Indian princes, cach really a king, doing homage to the king of a compara. tively small country thousands of miles away, but who was their empstor"
