THE DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL.
The Chinese, all over the Empire, during the next two days will be celebrating one of their most populas festivals, the "Twaniang Tsich." It commences on the 5th day of the moon, or, as we should say, to-morrow, the 31st inst., and it may be looked upon as China's Annual
Regula. It originated as far back 13 450 B.C., and does no, show any sign of waning popul- aray, and this in spite of the fact that the magistrates have, from time to time, endeavour. rd to stop its celebration by issuing prockman tions. The re son for this action of the officials is that so inany lives are fust, as the hoals arg not infrequently nverturnal.
Is gin is due to the following incident, reports the N. G. I Nor. In the year above mentioned there lived a just and able Minister of State who loved the people and who was held in greatesteem and respect by thear. One of the most popular of the wati dal poems of China, The Dissipation of Sorron 2, was written by him. Like many another good man, however, the only reward of his fidelity and zeal for his pince was his degradation and dismissal. Ite was su overe me by this base ingratitu e that heimsediatel; to the great distress and 50- guish of the people, drowned himself in a small river in Fasan. The cople. fearing that the fishes would disfigure the buy, immediately put out in buats to recover it, the rewers of each bout straining every nerve to get drip their fellows. This is supposed to have given rise to the rating of "dragon boa's? •For many years after his de 1b, he people focked to the plice where he committed suicide, They carried with them. Hitte packages of beled rice wrapped in bamboo leaves to he user in sacrifice to the spitit of their dead hero. Hence at the present time rice dumplings are catea in enormous quantities by the Chinese.
The Dragon Botts are long narrow boats, sometimes being fully to feet in length. Two men sit side by side and propel the boat with paddles. Immense crowds of spectators line banks of the river, occupying every vantage point, and they become greatly excited as con- tending boats sweep by to the clang of gongs, and the beating of drums which are found in so many boats. The crews are, sometimes, fearted by wealthy individuals, and not infrequently prizes are given to the successful crews. Mr. J. Dyer Ball, in Things Chinese, says. "The An nual Regattas throu hout China of the Dragon Boat Feast gives an outing to many a child and lady who, attired in their holiday best, line the banks of the rivers, and watch the narrow snake. like bonts dashing up and down in impromptu races and spurts with their rivals from neigh- bouring villages."

Intimations,
IT IS DIFFERENT NOW.
Once upon a time students of medicine held the notion that there were as many different diseases as the body has organs and pa..; every one of these ailments requiring a different treatment. Sa stupid a mistake
could lead caly to miserable sulures. For the
fact it, the body is a single machine; and what concerns one part of it concerna, more or less closely, all the rest. Thus we see how it happens that one remedy, or mode of treat- ment, may relieve and cure A variety of complaints, or what may appear like a variety, but are really various forms or out. comings of the same cause. Take, for example, Anemia, Scrofula, Poverty of Bloods Genera! Debility, Influenza, Throat and Lung Diseases, etc.--a formidable army indeed, they look to be; yet
WALPOLE'S PREPARATION quickly abates the worst of such cases, and absolutely cures many which have been abandoned as hopeless. The reasons are: its power over the digestive and assimilating process, its action in expelling impurities from the blood, and its consequent ability to vitalize and rebuild the whole structure. It is palatable as honey and contains the nutritive and curative properties of Pure Cod Liver Oil, combined with the Compound Syrup of Hypophosphites and the Extracts of Malt and Wild Cherry. It was not dreamed out, or discovered by accident; it was zudled out, on the selid principles of applied medical science. It is precisely what it is said to be, and has won the confidence of the public on that basis. You may resort to it with a faith and hope that arise from the history of what it has done for other. Dr. Thos. Hunt Stucky says: "The
continued use of it in my practice, convinces me that it is the most palatable, least nauseat- ing, and best preparation now on the market. Every dose affective. "You cannot be dis appointed in it." Sold by chemists here and throughout the world and A. S. Watson & Co., Limited.

CHINESE WORKERS IN THE MINES.
Two Britishers on an important mission will sail from here for China on the Empress, reports a Vancouver journal of the 4th inst. Messrs. H. Ross Skinner and H. H. Noyes, of Johannes- burg, who are en roule to the Far East as s commission of inquiry in regard to the securing of Chinese for the Transvaal mines, returned from a visit to Nanaimo and Vancouver Island Saturday. While on the island they made inquiries into the employment of Chinese in the mines and in other work there, Speaking of the Chinese, Mr. Skinner remarked that they appear to be good workmen, but they will not be able to form any real opinion of them fill they have seen them at work in large numbers, and in similar work to that for which they are required in the ansvaal. Messrs Skinner and Noyes intend proceeding from here direct to the Malay Peninsula, where they 'will have an opprtunity of seeing the Chinese working in the extensive tin mines of Malacca and neighbouring islands. They will then travel up the coast visiting Hongkong and other points and will in all probability return home ofa the trans-Siberian railway route.
The manual workers in the mines in the Transvaal, except those running machine drills, are blacks who are paid about sos per month and boarded and fed in a compound The native labour is, however, of a poor quality and fa insufficient to the supply available to operate the mines without obtaining other labour to- supplement it, The blacks" operate the band drills and a few become expert miners: all holes are located by the foreman or shift boss and are fired by him. The mining is not In quarts but in beds of "banket" separated by Layers of quartzine. The matrix of the gold and the filing of the reef is chiefly of rounded pebbles cemented by secondary silica and. also by sesquioxide of iron and, pyrites and chloritic matter. The gold is seldom found in the pebbles, being usually confined to the cementing material of the conglomemtes.
Ir Russia really does not want to fight, she must renovace bar present aggressive polley, remarks the N. C. D. News. It cannot be ex- pec'ed that the patience of Japan will be unli
