THE MAIL SERVICE 30 THE EAST.

As we anticipated, the opportunity of sending mails to the Far East by the Siberian railway is one which the British Government is not

likely to neglect (says the Rangoon Times)

but Mr. Austin Chamberlain tells us that no agreement has yet been reached and it is quite possible that none will be reached for some time to come, as there are several important international matters to be carefully considered before the railway to the Far East can be ac cepted as anything but an alternative route for the mails. Mr. James Caldwell, the Liberal member for mid Lanark, is reported to have

WANTED.

The bump of reverence is overshadowed by the bump of intelligence in the 20th century man and woman. Old things are not pre- served simply because they are old. WhatMENT CIVIL MEDICAL DEPARTMENT for

oever is no longer useful must get out of the AN EUROPEAN WARDMASTER.

way.

Nevertheless, progress that is not

intelligent will not be permanent. We shall continue to breathe air, drink water and eat bread. There will be no "improvement" on the great essentials of living, and we do not want any. Babies will come into the world as they have from the beginning, and people

world began. Let us not run away with the idea that all of our treasured opinions are to he upset. Through every change, all things which, like

severely criticised the Peninsular and Orienta: MR. WILLIAM H. GASKELL having will die out of it as they have done since the

Ma Service and it must be admitted that some justification exists for his doing so., Six Thomas Sutherland, the Chairman of the P. and 0, will no doubt have something to say to him in reply, for Sir Thomas is a great believei in his line and he has even expressed the bold pinion that he neither fears the rivalry of the Siberian line nga the prospects of a line through Mesopotama to Persian Gulf. The , and O.

is good enough in its way but when compared with the Atlantic greyhounds it is absolutely ndabere, and it is greatly on becount of its mmpoly of the mail service to the East that it has managed to hold its place up to the pre- sent day. If it loses the mail contract its dayy will be over. What we all want in the mail' steuners is greater speed and lower prices, and the P. & U. must either make arrangements to meet these demands or retire in lavour of lines There is no reason why some of that will. the lines should not put on their twenty. knot steamers, charge £30 a passage, and take the contract. The P. & O. dates back to 1825 when the William Fazu celt of 200 tons and 60 horse power first ploughed the briny deep in their interests, About 1854 the P. and O. had cogaged to run to India, China and Singapore. The Crimean war interrupted the service, as eleven of their boats were employed by Government in that struggle. The necessity growing for an in- dependent Australian mail line, the Govern- ment called for tenders in 1856, but the P. and Q. declined the onerous conditions, which however were accepted by another, fine, which soon failed, and in 1859 the Saminem accepted the P. & O. tender.

It is claimed for the P. ang′O. that the mails are invariably ahead of the contract times which are as follows.-

indian mails-Bombay (5) days. China-Shanghai 33 days. Australia-Adelaide 30 days.

The Caledonia 7,559 tons has landed the maihat Bombay within (2) slavs from Londen via Brindisi, the steamer's own passage be tween Bombay and Plymouth having been less than 7 days. The Gove nment steuner fan dinge, however, which took home the volun- teer contingent and samples of Indian troups to the King's Coronation, beat even this record and it is generally believed that the service might be greatly accelerated. Something will have to be done, because, as we before remark ed, it is absolutely absurd to think that mails from London to Shanghai cán arrive there in less time than they can reach Burma,
