THE PEKING SYNDICATES
-RAILWAYS
AND JARDINE MATHESON &
The Wai Wu-py has rojected the application put forward by the Peking Syndicate for a concession for a railway between Sin-yang and Pu-kao, on the pretext that the concession has already been given to Jardine Matheson & Co. The Wai Waipu says it does not concern it and it is quite indifferent whether I. M. & Co. transfer their rights to the Syndicate or not; that any way the Wai Wu-pu ħas in no longer any right to grant the concession to the Syndi.
cate. Of the proposed line the part between Tsechow to Wei hui has already been given to the Syndicate, and that between Wei hui to Yencheng is to ruit on the Lu Han Railway, while that from Yen cheng, in Konan via Chengyangkwan in Anhui, to. Prkna in the section for which the Syndicate has, applied for a concession to build which application has now been rejected. Messis Jardine, Matheson Company obtained the con- cassion for the line Ietween Sinyaogclaw to Pukan in 1898 and it was then agreed with the Chinese Government thai în case the work was not begun in two years from the signature of the agreement, the same should be cancelled. But a matter of fast owing to the Boxer
unubles, the work was inevitably delayed and thus Messers jardin.e, Ma heson retain their righ's over the concession even now. Anyhow the above e te circumstances the Wai Wupu has refused the application of the Peking Syndicate, though we know very well the real reson is very different and concerns more close- ly the extraordinary relations which exist belwern Sheng Kung-fas and the Belgian Russian group with which he is so profitally associa ed, and' who are so cleverly working out the quest of Central China by railway, as they have done so signally in Manchuria. The King of the Belgians will in a few years have the right to ask Russia and France to sent their troops to guaid the line he has obtained for them from Peking to Canton. What he has made out of this astute trading of his royal name as a stalking horse for Russia will pro- bably never be known.
HONGKONG AND LORD BEACONSFIELD
Wreaths from Mr Belilios, of Hongkong, in commemoration of Lord Reaconsfield areagain to the fore, the faithful philanthropist of the Far East never failing in the dutiful task be bas set himself, says the Daily Chronicle. Mr. Belilio has now been for forty years in Hong kong, and p obably no other man connected with the island-ince the British occupation has done so much. fo the place as he. Public schools for girls, peformatories, and various other institution: to help the poor and distress. ed upward, have bern built at his expense, scholarships have been founded in the higher schools, and in the general way his purse bas always been freely open for any movement for the good of the people, or the promotion of British interests or the China coast. Mr. Belilios has two Tads-giving money away and yachting.

liver oil. Its virtues are not in its fatty matters; much less in its sickening täsie and sell. No consumptive, or sufferer from any oiler wasting disease, was ever greatly bene filed by the so called "plain cod liver oil. The shock it gives to the nerves, the repulsion and disgust it excites in the stomach, the outrages it commits upon the senses of smell and taste, are enough to spoil any medicinal potency that may be in it for the majority of people. This to say nothing about its being indigestible. Yet there has always been reason to believe that, among the elements which form cod liver oil, there existed curative properties of the highest value. But it was necessary to separate them from the nauseating waste material with which they were com bined, This was successfully accomplished
in
WAMPOLE'S PREPARATION
and in this effective remedy, made palatable as honey, we have the very heart and soul of Pure Cod Liver Oil, combined with the Comp. Syrup of Hypophosphites and the Extracts of Malt and Wild Cherry. These constitute a tissue-builder, a blood purifer, a health

It has become almost a permanent, not an annual, decoration; and below it a bank of prim. roses was made, with which the bitter wind had played disastrously, as it had with the poor, fading inle bunches lying strewn about on the grass.
