FRENCH FORces in the FAR EAST.

So much has recently been heard with regard to the reported movement of France in Kyangsi that a short account of the new organization of the French forces in the East

should not be out of place. Late news to hand from Shanghai says the Canton gentry in that part have received a telegram from Kwangsi to the effect that the French troops had entered within the borders of that pro- vince from Haiphong via Man-kai, but not through the invitation of the Governor Wane Chih-chun. Man-kai is on the Kwangsi Yunnan frontiers and before the war with France in 1884 was the home of Liu Yung-fu and his famous Blackflags. In another column will be found a denial to the as- sertions made against the Govcmor. The N, C. D. News, however, prints a Ngan Hing, capital of Anhoi, despatch to Of the highest standard of excellence and the effect that several battalions of the

With such fierceness did the flames spread, that in a few seconds the timber was alight. Sparks flew in all directions and some of them falling on top of one of the matsheds in the hospital com- pound caused the roof to take fire. Fartun ately a member of the Fire Brigale, of the name of Hill, was in the Hosnital convalescent from cholera, and he took charge of the Hospital fre apparatus' and extinguished the outbreak in the matshed before much damage was done His presence in the building allowed the wardmasters to give their whole attention to the patients who were removed from the matsheds into the main building, and as long as there was any risk of fire from the

All the battalions in question are armed with modern Mausers, and it is stated they also possess a couple of Maxims each. "CHINA COASTERS."

"Dolly" has followed his readable little book on Tales of Hongkong by a companion voluma describing some of the wanderings and exper inces of China. Coasters, and readers on good terms with themselves and everybody in general will be likely to peruse the work with a ripple of naisement that may sometimes bronden into a Laugh. In our review of " Dolly's" first publica- tion we expressed our high appreciation of the author's work, and commented on the interest attaching to his description of life in the Colony, and on reading through the present volume wo find that his narratives of life at sen are equally as interesting. The texture of China Coasters is slightly, that after perusing the 150 odd pages one wonders what it was that proved so pleasing, while at the same time there is a distinct consciousaes of respect for a writer of capital. Dolly" has taken his vast amount that succeeds in pleasing with so little ounity of unpromising material from the "little gems of truth" deled out by China coasters lubricated with the right sort of gargic," tempered with a sweet drawing briar. The chacters in the tales are the ustial ones, and

it

makes little difference whether the picture he

has made of the seafaring fraterity is true or false; the great thing is that. “Dolly" has made them seem inge. Everything and everybody is beautifully in tune and is exactly the proper relation to everything and with everybody else, and despite the sea atmosphere about the book, it is greatly enjoyed at a safe distance from danger and should prove a capital addition to the shelves of a cosmopolitan library. OUTBREAK IN CROSS STREET. While the fire was in progress, the fire be'l sounded again, and the reserve Brigade turned out at midnight, but their services were not required. The fire, which was a small one, occurred in Cross street, in one of Chy Loong's bakeries. The Eastern district fire engine, under Inspector Collet, of No. a Police Station. was immediately on the scene, and with a few streams of water prevented the flames from spreading. Damage to the extent of $70 was done. The fire was due to a stove overheating the wood work alongside.
