PUBLIC AUCTION.

The southern portion of the province of Kwangtung, in which province, but to the THE Undersigned have received instructions THE Undersigned has received instructions

north, is situated Canton—the capital of South Ching-consists of a peninsula some 16 miles in length from north to south and 18 miles from east to west. It is bounded on the sastërn sido by Mirs Bay—a large and important argi of the sea, offering a secure anchorage, as it is protected on three sides-while on the west a similar arm, known as Deep Bay, bounds it, This latter, however, although it possesses equal facilities for sheltering vessels, aïdit is almost entirely landlocked and should therefore be adapted for security against any weather, is, in spite of its title, which is distinctly a mis- nomer, a very dhallow and silted harbour, and quite useless, in consequence, as an anchorage for other than ships baring very small draught.

The territory included between these two bays and extending north as far as tho Sham Chun river, was leased by the Chinese government la tha· Brílish under the Cosven- tion of 1898, its acquisition being considered mecessary to us to safe-guard`our Colony of Hongkong on the north side from any attack that might be made on it from that direction. Although, however, for all purposes of govern ment, now completely under our rule, it main- tains its original characteristics in their entire- ty, and as regards the mode of living of the people and the aspect of the country, towns, villages, &c, it is as essentially Chinese as any other portion of that empire.

Let us then proceed to visit and inspect this small portion of the Flowery Land and to view the celestial under his natural conditions.

Starting from the cast of the Peninsula we may suppose that wa have entered Mirs Bay and landed at its northern end. Here we find a very picturesque country along the coast line, consisting of ranges of low hills on the coast itself, but further inland these rise to a height of nearly 2,000 feet. The ranges are intersected with valleys, most of which are cultivated, and in almost every case, contain a town or village, occasionally more than one of these. These villages on the coast are very wall and prettily built, the houses being con. structed of brick and generally faced with cut stone, the roofs being of red tile and of the. curious concave profile distinctive of Chinese

architecture. Their inhabitants are cultivators, and raise good crops of paddy and vegetables and also barley, but owing to their situation they are in addition largely employed in fishing and this may be said to be their principal occupation,

Their fishing operations are

conducted with a great deal of science for not only do they employ the ordinary drag, or seive net commonly used in Europe, but they also bave numerous stationary nets, as to include most of the smaller falets and tidal crecka. Their takes are considerable and include many kinds of excellent dah, while trawling för oysters and lobsters is also largely carried out. The fish are packed at once and either despatched by junks to the various coast ports or else they are salted and disposed of locally.

We am now speaking of the "open" villages and hot of the walled towas, s description of which will be given later. The only large buildings of the villages are the Joss-house and schools. Those are usually centrally situated and of more importance than the other structures. The jose-houses are guard. ed by very strong gatos, and for the most part forbidden ground to the wondering European, bat the schools are open and free to inspection. Those latter are quite an institution, and every village or group of villages, possesses at least one. The young celestials of both sexes may her be viewed under instruction seated at desks and engaged in their tasks of reading, cypharing or copying, for all the world like the children of an academy in the wast. A large open courtyard is the main feature of the Hull............... edface, round which in an open verandah, the scholars sit while the top and is occupied by a sort of alter covered with figures, flowers, and other various "Joss," so that it would appear that these schools have a religious basis, although the management seems to be entirely | sacolar, R¤ BUMPERUNAN SA
