CHINESE LOOT. SEIZED IN AMERICA.
There is now in the hands of the Deputy Surveyor of the Port, Chauncey St. John, one of the precious jade ancestral tablets looted from the imperial temple of Peking by the allied troops during the Boxer outbreak, and for the recovery of which the Chinese Government has offered a reward of $100,000.
St. John seized the priceless tablet as an unde- clared valuable in the baggage of a United States army officer returning from China on the transport Sheridan.
a
To the strong religious mind of the Chinese, says a Frisco exchange, this little piece of flaw- leas, green jade, carved with quaint characters, has a value which cannot be conceived. It is tribute to the Emperor Huang Tao Ta Hsing, who lived two centuries ago, but aside from that, according to Chinese tradition, the spirit of the Emperor is supposed to reside in the v'ry mortuary tablet addressed to him. Desecration of the memory of the dead is therefore the great crime to be remedied by the recovery of the tablet which has led the Chinese Government to offer the reward.

NOTICE. Messrs. DORABJEE NOWROJEE, I. P. THE Partnership formerly existing between

MR. WILLIAM FARMER is from such date
entirely takes over and becomes responsible for the business of the VICTORIA HOTEL, Shameen, Canton, Mes-is, DORABJEE NOWRO- JEE and I. P. MADAR as from such date entirely take over and become responsible for the businesses of the NEW VICTORIA and KING EDWARD HOTELS, Hongkong,
Dated this 14th day of April, 1993. *
The tablet is 12 x 4 inches and balf an inch thick. It is carved out of a single slab of the finest grade of very dark, unclouded jade, which is one of the precious stones of China Upon the face of the polished slab is the laudatory inscriptio⚫ to the men ory of the dead Emperor.
When St. John made the seizure of the tablet 4700] he communicated with the Chinese Consul and CS Chan, his secretary, was sent to confer with the deputy surveyor relative to the return of the tablet to the temple at Peking, whence it was stolen. According to the Chinese secre- tary, the little piece of stone is of boundless value and its return to his Government will be considered a diplomatic courtesy, as was a similar proceeding made in June, 1902, in the case of the great seals brought over by Lieutenant P. Schoeffel.
The inscription on the tablet, which was translated by Dr. J. E. Gardner, the interpreter of the Chinese Bureau, is replete with quaint expressions of praise. It is as follows:
In the thirteenth year of Yung Ching, known as Yi Mao, in the cyclical order of years, eleventh month known as Ping She, and twelfth day after the first day the new moon, known as Tin Wei (1736 A.D., on or aboat December 15] comes your son and successor to the throne, your servant Hang Li, who again doing obeis- ance with his head to the ground respectfully addresses your Imperial Majesty, Huang Kao Ta Hsing, Supreme Emperor, whom your servant acknowledges as possessing complete virtue like unto Heaven, bequeathing unto the world a sublime example for myriads of ages and as having profound goodness permeating the whole earth so that its effulgence is sent down for thousands of autumas, Your servant would proclaim your Majesty's illustrious attributes in offering this tribute and would investigate and set forth your Majesty's excel. lent plans of government in order to show esteem for loftiness of conduct and character, the lustre of which has been shed upon our valued archives and the brightness of which is to be upon these tablets.
Your Majesty's principles have conserved peace to the empire and your achievements have brought plenty to the people.
Your Majesty's performances of worship at the temples of the State have been over rever ent and sincere, honouring Heaven with an undivided heart and serving him with deep devotion.

Writing on the scarcity of house accommo- dation for the European community of Bombay and the exorbitant rents charged for unwhole some and insanitary residences in Flats, the Times of India goes on to say:-
The fact is that Flat life is dista-teful to Englishmen everywhere, and in particular does not conduce to healthy conditions of existence in the tropics, especially for la lies. The Euro pean residents in Bombay, in renting dats, have

present many of them has nowhere to go. But we trust the time is soon coming when Euro- peans and natives alike will cease to be con tent to huddle together on a narrow neck of land, and will move outwards. The new rail. way which is to connect the trunk line with the docks will bring the business quarter into quick communication with large tracts of good build- ing land in the northern part of the island. Electric tramways, if we ever get them, will still further stimulate the outward movement. The day should come when the deserted heights of Trombay will be the sight of a flourishing suburb, and when good bungalows will be ob tainable there at moderate rents. What has been done as the Peak at Hongkong ought to be possible for Trombay."
The Government of Bombay, the Municipa lity and the Port Trust also come in fora portion
of its comment,-
"We recently pointed out that the Bombay Goverment have never encouraged building. and that their first thought has been not the .. welfare of the City and the Presidency but their own pockets. We assert with confidence that if Goverment, and the bodies they control, had stown less of the spirit of Shylock, the rena for the better kind of houses would never have risen to their present height, and the wicked and iniquitous overcrowding in the slums would have been largely avoided. YOU WILL NOT BE DECEIVED. That there are cheats and frauds in plenty everybody knows; but it is seldom ar never that any large business house is guilty of them, no matter what line of trade it follows. There can be no permanent success of any kind based on dishonesty or deception. There bever was, and never will be. The men who try that are simply foola and soon come to grief-as they deserve. Now many persons are, nevertheless, afraid to buy certain advertised articles lest they be bumbugged and deluded; especially are they slow to place confidence in published statements of the merits of medicines. The effective remedy known as
WAMPOLE'S PREPARATION in as safe and genuine an article to purchase as flour, silk or cotton goods from the mills of manufacturers with a world-wide reputation. | We could not afford to exaggerate its qualities. or misrepresent it in the least; and it is not necessary. It is palatable as honey and con. tains the nutritive and curative properties of Pure Cod Liver Oil, extracted by us from fresh cod livers, combined with the Compound Syrup of Hypophosphites and the Extracts of Malt and Wild Cherry; and how valuable such a blending of these important medicinal agents must he is plain to everybody. It is beyond price in Anemia, Scrofula, Weakness and lack
of Nervous Tone, Wasting Diseases, Bron- chitis, La Grippe, Lung Troubles and Im- purities of the Blood. Science can furnish Bothing better-perhaps nothing so good. Dr. W. H. Dalfe, of Canada, says; "I have used it in my practice and take pleasure in recommend- ing it as a valuable tonic and reconstructive," It is a remedy that can afford to appeal to its record and represents the science and know- ledge of bright and aggressive medical in- vestigation. P.&O. AND THE MAIL.
Mr. Austen Chamberlain has given notice to the P. & O. Company and Orient Company to terminate their mail contracts for India, the East, and Australia on 31st December, 1995, Bays Capital. We trust that this will mean a renewal of the contract to the. P. & O. Comp- any on the basis of, say, seventeen knots to Bombay. The P. & O. Company are quite prepared to do this if the Government are pre- pared to pay a proper sum for it, and I under- atand they offered to do so when the fast COD- tract was made. But the Government chore instead to pursue a niggardly policy in the matter, and preferred to save money rather than give a good service. In view of the fact that postal service yields such a handsome surplus, there is absolutely no excuse for the niggardly policy in the past.
