SELLING GIRLS IN CHINA.

The following has been translated from Der Ostrstatische Lloyd

Arthur H. Smith in bis Villags Life in China

refers in the chapter Chinese Country Girls and Women" to the practice in existence in China of selling young girls, and traces this practice to the common idea that girls are in- ferior to hays. This inferiority, from a Chinese point of view, is explained by the fact that to bring up a girl is, so to speak, a poor-invest. ment, she having no means of repaying, in what form soever, the outlay her bringing up might havo involved. · Not only, 'while in the house, is she of little economical value, and when married severs all connections with her family, but she is also by religious law preven ted from sacrificing to her deceased parents,- all reasons for which she does not participate "old age" and "next_life""In- in the great Aurance scheme, which forms the main idea And the main impetus of parental care and filial piety.

In Smith's latest publication Proverbs and Common Sayings we find the Chinese text of the proverb quoted by him that "The most ideally excellent daughter is not equal to a

splay, footert son" (+MBAŽU 不上个韪脚的兒, the 4.18 Lo-han

daughter" referring to the 18 Lo-bans, the per- sonal disciples of Buddha, models of virtus, deserving and worthy.

The sale of girls is, to use again. Smith's words, conducted in some places as openly as any other traffic, so that it may be of interest to give below a translation of a document referring to the translation of a girl from her parents to another person, a woman, to'be her slave.

The document in question was procured in in Ningpo and, although there is little chance

⚫ of any of the parties concerned ever reading this article, their signatures with one exception, being made by impressing the ink-coloured thumb on the paper, a practice similar to the Cross(x) signature used by analphabletka in Western countries, yet I suppress the names of vendors and buyer.

The absence in the text of the word or Idea of "sale" is interesting, the transaction being called "the giving away of a girl" (-), and the money received by the parents is not "the sale price" but is given to them "out of com- miseration and the order to recompense them

The translation of the document, with omission of names, is as follows:-

"This is a deed drawn up to witness the fact that 1.

and my wife.. natives of Ningpo, have ceased for ever all interest in our girl who is given away this day..

We are very poor, out of employment and friendless, with a large number of children who

are always crying for bread and never satisfied,

and so we find it difficult in our old age to make

two ends meet and that is the reason why we, after laag consideration, have agreed to part with our own daughter. She was born on the

16th day of the 11th moon of the year 辛卯

16th December, 1891) and now we band here through a middlewoman over to Mrs.

to serve her as a slave girl. The same day on which this deed was drawn up, Mrs.

(the new owner of the girl) paid out of commi seration and in order to repay our expenses for bringing the girl up, the sum of $34, which we received la fall and we thereupon handed par- sonally the girl to her, to be forever her slave and we agree that she may change the girl's name and bring her up in any way the likes and whether the girl' live or die, no claim will bo made by us. This is further to witness that: the transfer of the girl is transformed openly in the presence of relations and neighbour, and that when she grows up and gets married we shall not interfere. The girl is given away by our own free will and not kidnapped or banded over in payment of a mortgage contracted by gambling, and if ever any difficulty with refer ence to the girl's origin should- arise, the middlewoman and we, the parents, shall be the only ones liable to responsibility,

The girl has never been engaged and since we now openly agree to give her away, regret in the future will be of no avail. · We also. promise that after Mrs.

.bas once taken her over, nolther we nor any relations will ever visit her and the destiny of her life is, as far as we are concerned, left to fate.

Fearing that a verbal agreement may not be sufficient proof, this is put down in writing, signed By all the parties concerned and handed to M....................... as proof. “

We also herewith sign a receipt for 534 paid: to us as compensation for, the expenses the bringing up of the girl has caused.
