IT LOOKS LIKE A FRAUD. Some time ago a man who said he repre- sented an American company visited Canton in the interests of what he called "The Univer sal Oil Purifying Co." This agent succeeded. in selling a good many dollars work of his wares. One firm bought over Scco worth and agreed to act as agent. The goods delivered are in the forin of a powder, This powder put into kemene oil is supposed to work some change in it by which the lighting properties of the oil are i creased.. The lamp chimneys are also rendered less breakable.. It is a fact that in the Uni ed States there is a powder which its maa acturers claim will do this and also reduce the amount of oil consumed. This agent who has lately visited: Canton may be all right and his powder genuine. His boxes: however would indicate that the whole thing it a fraud. I have tried the powder and have been unable to detect the slightest increase in the brilliancy of the light. I give balow the description of the powder as it appears, on the latel of the large box. Any European reading it will not be likely to buy the powder. He will likely conclude that some Chinaman has had a band in preparing it. It is as follows a
