the proposal of 11e directors in this respect is

an eminently reasonable one and should obtain our full support. The amount is not much, The Chairman has shown that on an average, if, as we hops. the prosperity of the Company continues, the amount subscribed by the share- holders will be less than was formerly sub- scribed as a bonus. If it necessary in the interests of a company-because the interests of a company and of the employees are identical -to found a provident fund in Europe surely it is much more so in a country like this where Europeans work very long hours, sometimes, too, on Sundays, in climates to which they are not suited by Birth and are in every way handicapped. A similar-system, I may remark, was brought into force by the Telegraph Com- pany some years ago, and other companies have done the same. It is not only because the proposal comes from the directors, but because it is in the interests of the shareholders, that I hope it will be carried by a large majority (applause).

Mr. Parlane: A great deal has been said about this Provided Fund and about being accompanied by bonus Do I understand that if this Provident Fund is carried that the bonus granted at the end of the successful year will be abolished?

The Chairman-Abolished (applause). The motion was then put to the meeting and lost by a large majority.

DIRECTORS.

On the motion of Mr. Parlane, seconded by M7. Cruickshank, the appointment of the Hon. C. W. Dickson and Messrs C. M chelau and f. H. Lewis as directors was confirmed, and on the

proposition of Mr. Danby seconded by Mr.

Hewett, Messrs. N. A. Siebs and G. H. Med- burst were re-elected to the Board.

AUDITORS.

Messrs. T. Arnold and Fullarton Henderson were re-elected as auditors, and the meeting closed.

AT THE THEATRE.

"THE SECOND IN COMMAND."

The production of Robert Marshall's four-act military comedy The Second in Comnend was exceptionally well received at the Theatre Royal on Saturday evening when the members of the Brough Company staged the play for the first thine in China. Many wil remember that the piece was first produced at the Haymarket Theatre, when Mr. Cyril Maude gave a splendid personation of the leading part and Miss Winifred Emery appeared as Muriel Mannering. As its name implies, it is essen- tialy a military piece, and its production here. was excellent and must have pleased the most fastidious so far as military etiquette and details were concerned.

As a matter. of fact, Mr. Brough has made the.statement that the play is one of the most billiant from
