On the paddock a goudly number of ladies were seen and these, robed in exceptionally fine dresses, completed a scene of pleasing anima- tion. The excellent band of the Sherwood Foresters, under the leadership of Bandmaster E. J. Bradley, added a great deal to the after-
noon's enjoyment, playing the following selec-
follies of the turf when the opportunities for so doing occur at such long intervals in the Colony. It is not surprising, therefore, that the race carnival is conducted with all the traditional enthusiasm which Britishers
carry
with them wherever they go. The opening day of the Race Meeting of 1903 was no exception to the general rule. Situated as we are, there must of necessity be a great deal of difficulty in obtaining the right sort of animals for the numerous events, but enthusiasts were not found wanting eithe; in trouble, pains, or money to secure the best racers they could for nur annual fixture. For-o'clock, merly, horses of English breed were imported, but this made meing one of rather restricted interest on account of the prohibitive rost of bringing the animals so great a distance to China Then we looked to the Northern ports for our subscription griffins as well as the

The first saddling bell was rung at eleven and the horses for the initial event of the meeting, the Wong-nei-chong Stakes, showed their appearance on the turf soon after and, punctually to time, the opening event of the day was run, at 11.30 am. It proved a somewhat tame affair Ichiban secur ing a lead on the straight and winuing the event without any difficulty. But it came somewhat as a surprise to the ever increasing crowd of spectators when the jocks' turned out for the Valley Stakes. It was a big field; and although it resolved into a race between the leading ponies, Flickamaroo's mount struggled hard for seni arity,
