with them wherever they go. The opening day of the Race Meeting of 1903, was no exception to the general rule. Situated as we are, there must of necessity be a great deal of difficulty in obtaining the right sort of animals for the numerous events, but enthusiasts were not found wanting either in trouble, pains, or money to secure the best racers they could for our annual fixture. For- merly, horses of English breed were imported, but this made racing one of rather restricted interest on account of the prohibitive cost of bringing the animals so great a distance to China. Then we looked to the Northem ports for our subscription griffing as well as the FURNITURE Derby panies, and until political trouble broke
