"Ragging" in the Army.

LONDON. February 5th.

A somewhat sensational sequel bas occur red to the recent ragging of three subalterns in the 1st Grenadier Guards. The father of Lord Douro, one of the subalterns concern- ed, bringing the myter to the notice of Lord Roberts, the latter instituted an inquiry, which has resulted in the summary retire- ment of Lieut. Col. Kinloch, commanding the battalion, on balf pay, and the resigna tion of Lieut. Hollinshed Blundell. The action of Lord Roberts, is approved of by the military and the public.

Report of the Chartered British

South Africa Co.

The report of the Chartered British South. Africa Co. has been issued. It anticipates that the output of gold in Rhodesia will be doabled in the next two years, largely on account of the extension of railways and the Fopping Coal fields. As the expense of living largely hampers the progress of the Company, the directors have decided to give freight Contracts to Companies outside the ring.

The Venezuela question. Sir Michael Herbert has had a stormy meeting with Mr. Bowen at which he spoke very plainly regarding the conduct of the negotiations. The interview was a heated one but, it is stated, has cleared the air.

great discoveries, buc eriology had been the when cholera is prevalent. Institutions and engineer is investigating, Prince Magun's There is no demand to Java. Coal frights are i icme of a graded process of evolution. The very existence of bacteriology and padology, as a science, could never have been recognised so long as the subjects of remained undeveloped. Brilliant had been the many triumphs of medical science during the line Victorian age, yet all of them paled before the great discovery of the time--the parasitical origin of disease. Bacteria were organisms of a vegetable nature, and in their various form's were responsible for many differ- ent contagious diseases, such as plague, typhoid, & phtheria, and choler.. Malaria fever, on the other hand, was caused by parasital germs of animal natu.e. Bacterial germs were plague, diphtheria and cholera. divided under three main healings, the Coccur or circular, the Bacillus or end-shaped, and the Spirillum or curved. The plague bacterium was Bucles_and_the cholera b-cellum.a-Spirit. hum, The, euns were so infinitely minuteas never to be visible to then ied eye. Their dimensions were from 0002 to 00006 of an inch in length and diameter. They had different methods of guleth, some became canstricted in the middle and bribe across, thers were in the habit of budding, and others again bad spores. The latter ty e were very difficult to eradicate for the spares were much more difficult to deprive of life than the bacteria proper Their up'day of multiplication was almost incredible, and it was t is which made them of to great significarce. They'divided about once in 20 or 3 minutes, so that the number of offspring from one bacteria in 24 huis was 16,500,000. in two days the decendants would number 280,500,000,000, and this wass would form about a solul pint of m'cro-organisms and weigh shout a pound. In three days the total would amount to 47,000,000,000,05, thus showing that they were dealing with a power of almost infinite extent. Bacteria were universally found on the surface of the earth. They were on plants, animals, in tre soil, and even to con- siderable depths in the ocean; and were especi- ally present in regions of habitation. Any thing which tended to raise dost increased the number of bacteria in the air, a d the dust and emanations from the clothes of people crowded in a close room
