A few minutes after three o'clock this morn- ing the fire alarm was heard ringing at Kaw loon. The Fire Brigade, under Captain Lyons and Chief Inspector Mackie, immediately pro- ceeded, in the inverament fi e pinnace, to the scene of he outbreak, and found that No. 48 Elgin, near the Kowloon Hotel, was burning fiercely Seeing that there was little chance of saving the premises, the firemen directes their energy to the rounding houses, and soon had the fames subdued. The honse, which was a four-storied building and used as a Chinese shop, was entirely gutte'. We are informed that the building was fully insured.

THE CURRENCY QUESTION.

A valued correspondent sends to the M. C. D. News the following remarks question, which has recently become a very on this

acute ont:~*

"One of the clauses of the Treaty of Shang- hai is that it is agreed that the Chinese Government shall introduce a coinage for the Empire, which shall be the only legal tender, fo, the payment of all duties, etc.

"This clause was, by a large number of people in London, considered to be of more

importance than the rest of the treaty, because it seemed to give promise that, if it were carried out in such a manner as to be effectives there might eventually be a currency in the Chinese Empire with a stability apart from the value of silver bars.

with all the other Asiatic commercial countries making their standard in gold is obvious, and we print our correspondevi's letter, as we have said, merely as one contribution in the dis- cussion of the subject which is now imminent.
