PYGMALION AND GALATEA
AT THE THEATRE ROYAL. ...
The miserable weather of the past few days must be held accountable for the limited attendance at the City Mall where the Janet Waldorf Company has been presenting a series of plays. With the mi ing of the curtain last evening on Pygmalion and Galatea there was no change. Outside, the rain pelted down on to the muddy and deserted streets; inside, the Company was delighting a small audience with Gilbert's clever classical comedy. It is needless to dwell upon the story unfolded in three acts; those who were present followed its stronge course; absentees must take an assurance that the piece is worth seeing. As to the individual
players, Miss Jane Waldorf, as Galated, and Mr. Norval McGregor, in the rule of Pygmu ios call for "first mention. To be. candid, we did not like our favourite in the impersonation of Galaten-either the character did not suit her or she was unsuited to the character. We fancy it was the latter, for as Miss Waldorf has made so many fine appearances her interpretation of the most difficult of characters is generally assured. Take, for instance, the dif- ficult task in essaying the part of Camille. Although we have not had the pleasure of perusing the contents of the petition from what we can gather, the contractors are at present dissatisfied with the Building Ordinance, and the general way' in which they are treated by the Government officials in charge of the Building Acts. They state that if the Government had more house. inspectors and more inspections made on the buildings in course of erection, and ther mistakes pointed out to them, there would Le the houss collapse and lives are lost that the no collapses and no inquiries. WESLEYAN MISSIONARY
ANNIVERSARY,
LARGE AND ENTHUSIASTIC GATHERING,
The Missionary Anniversary, held in con nection with the Wesleyan Church, War chai, was very successful and even enthusiatic. There are those who think that such gatherings should be more frequently held, where, amidst a genuinely religious atmosphere, knowledge can be imparted and interesi stimulated in the work of foreign missions. Last Sunday's ser- wiges were well attended, church being crowd- ed in the morning, both with Service:men and civilians, and in the evening the building held the largest congregation ever seen in it at a voluntary service. Dr. Beattie of Canton preached in the morning a very able and forceful sermon, and Mr. Bone preached, at Balb-Keeled night a truly rousing seimon. Both sermons were missionary. Monday's weather was "1 ot very propitious, for the afternoon gave us drizzly....... rain and the evening sent a torrent which no doubt kept some away. There were, however, not less than 160 at tea, (which by the way was Scratch not a "free feed)" It was cheering to see so 1mins many at the artistically decorated tables enjoy
ing the good fare that so many kind folk bail sent and so many willing hands distributed. The evening meeting was an inspiration, and all · who were present were, we belieye, the better. for having come. The Hon. F.H. May, C. G presided and in the course of a humorous and able speech recalling many amusing incid ents of his "Canton life of long ago when he knew missionaries personally. In the course. of his remarks he said, "Although the number of converts relative to the population was small, still I have found that the number of* true Christians who had been converted by the missionaries, the work done in the hospitals and in educating Chinese was incalculable
