A Portuguese clerk in the employ of Messrs Arnhold Karberg left the office at the usual time yesterday evening and having just received his-monthly salary was making for his home when three ruffians ac. costed him, and threw pepper into his eyes, rubbed him of his money and camped. this occurred on the Canal Road facing Shameen.

Yesterday morning the Norwegian steamer "Labor collided with a large junk in tow of a Jaunch on its way to Ci ton from a market town. It was early morning and very dark. . The American Cnsul, Mr. Ragsdale left for home on four months' leave. It is generally hoped that he will be appointed for another spell here, as he has suited Tientsin very well. The American Consular system precludes the most representative class of men filling these posts, and Americans abroad li ve much as a rule, Yo say about the inefficiency of their match.
