OUR LONDON LETTER.!
(From Our Own Correspondent)
LONDON, October 3rd, -THE DEAD NOVELIST. The death of M. Zóla is fairly entitled to be considered the event of the week, although other and more material matters ́ have tended
-to drive it out of sight during the last few days.
On the particulars which you will have received. by cable, there is no occation to dwell, though they created a very painful impression here for that a man of such parts should fail, u victim to accident of so trivial a nature seems a pitiful piece of irony,. Zuta, despite the critics and the moralists, was personally popular in this country, where he made warm friends during his stay in London after condemnation in the Dreyfus business; and it was to some of these British acquaintances that he confided his regret at being regarded as an immoral authori write," he said, "the truth that people may hate
what is vile in it," or words to that effect. Curiously enough though he liked and admired this country much, Zala never acquire the language, respecting which fact he had perhaps only one regret, viz., his consequent inbility to read Shakespeare in the original. When one recalls after what fashion the inimitable bard is readered into French, the measure of his loss is gauged approximately. Compare, for exaniple, the virile salutation, Hait Mcbeth 1 with the graceful commonplace- fiel bon-jour Macbeth?" of the French translation.
It is possible that one or two representatives of British contemporary literature may go over to Paris on Sunday to attend the funeral-at, which it is greatly to be feared some hostile demonstration may be made by the crowd-

to stare alicicis no foundation for the rumour. It would indeed seem impossible. for the Ministry to withdraw a third Education Bill af er prolonged discussion jo Parliament, without suffering, very badly in credit. It has been done twice with loss of prestige on each occasion, and it is now pro-" bable, though perhaps not certain, that the Government will elect to stand or fall by the Bill. Compromise is, however, much in the air, and if rumour. becomes fact, the chances of the Bill becoming law, are more reintq than if having promulgated a policy which it believes to be fair and reasonable, the Government elects to stand by its own creation. Any further weakening of the fundamentals of the Act would alienate the present supporters who already hold too much has been conceded to mere howl and unseason"; while nothing short of complete re-casting will gain the Non- conformist, Radical, oropenly irreligious vaters,
Pu cly as Education, the Bill may not be of great interest to outlying parts of the Empire, but anything likely to bring a change
of Ministry, becomes at once of moment to every Imperialist,
THE GOVERNMENT AND THE MORGAN
COMBINE.
The Morgan combine arrangements have loomed very large in the Press, in commercial, shipping, and general circles all this week, but it is extremely difficult to arrive at sound criti- cisnt. There are two clear schools of thought. (a) The Government has been over-reached, and Mr. Morgan ges more out of the Agree ment than appears on the surface.
() Mr. Morgan is distinctly checked, and as i'in the Tobacco War, this country has scored a
decisive victory.
Between these two extremes every possible
more especially as Captain Dreyfus has in-shade of opinion is freely expressed. timated his intention of tuflawing to its last resting place the body of the man who suffered so much on his behalf.
SIAMESE AFFAIRS.
The current Fortnightly, conta-us a very in- teresting anonymous article on the Siamese complication, illustrated by an excellent mip. which may perhaps bring home to the minds of a public, always sluggish where Far Eastern affairs are concerpe, the exte it of that forward novement which French policy is scheming. The author urges with much cogency the im portance of a seulement, at, the present time
The fact that no British representatives appear on the Financial and Executive Committee, and that in the general Committee they number only five to the American eight, is probably a less unfavourable sympton than

He points out the weak- ness incidental in bad drafting of the 1896 Convention, and ins sts that this time finality must be introduced, if war between the protect ing Powers is not to be left a possible risk for all time. Further the writer emphasises what has hitherto been somewhat overlooked at home, That the construction of the new railway brings Bangkok to within 8 hours of the border of France is now that new province which seeking to claim as within her Sphere. The Government which overlooks the strategical importance of Bangkok, comman sing the com- munications between England and the Far East, would surely be blind, beyond "even the blindness which perennially affects Downing Street, when its eye is tur ed towards the Orient.
EDUCATION BILL
All kinds of stories have been bandied about. respecting the intentions of the Cabinet with i regard to the Education Bill, till last night Unionist speakers at a public meeting tele- graphel to Mr. Balfour asking for a definite statement as to the rumoured abandonment. The balance of instructed opinion, so far as I am able to gauge it, inclines to the rew that we have come out of the Joncern very satisfactorily.
AND. O. COMPANY,
Another shipping rumour is agitating the business world, The P. & O: Company have more than once contemplinted removing their final port. I call from London to Southampton, and the question is once more seriously under consideration. The loss to London would be about £103,00 per annum, but the port is so defective, and reforms so slow in coming, that all the great steamship lines are dropping away. The two ships now under construction for the P. & O: could not berth in the Docks.

It is considered that the present courtesy of the King is to mark his personal satisfaction with the gunnery and other efficiency records, of the ship Captain Scott so successfully com- marded.
KWANGSI REBELS IN KWEI-
CHOU PROVINGE.
The N. C. D. Niwus translates the following from their Chiengsha native correspondent's letter News was received here the other day that a large body of Kwangsi rebels had in vaded Kweichou province and was besieging the city of Hsingyihsien. Immediately after this Governor Yu Lien-san of this city received
i a telegram from Governor, Têng Hua-bai, of Kwucichou province, urging that as Hsiyihsien, which was being besieged by Kwangsi rebles, is near the Kweichou-Hunan frontiers, the authorities of the fatter province should send aid to Kweichou and assist in raising the siege of Hsingyihsien and exterminating the invaders. Upon receipt of the dispatch Gover nor Yu Lien-san was just on the point of send ing a strong force over the borders into Kwei chou when another dispatch from Governor Teng Hua-si arrived informing him that Hsingyitsien had succumbed to the assaults. of the rebels who, flushed with victory, were being joined by large binds of desperadoes and rowdies. The dispatch also stated that the Kwangsi rebels were sending out placards proclaiming that the object of their invasion of Kweichou was not to ravage the province but merely to borrow a passage into Szechuan, whither they (the rebels) were bound for the purpose of assisting the Boxers in that pro- vince."
THE WORD OF HONOUR.
The men who do as they say ; the things that "prove to be what they were said to be,--how cheering it is to come upon them. We all late-to-be deceived; especially when the decep--- tion is intentional. "But all men are not liars, even if David did say so în his laste. If they were society would be impossibile. Everybody knows that business is based on credit, on
:
faith. Millions are bought daily on nothing more solid than the pledged promises of men, -not written, merely verbal. The Stock Ex- changes are often called nests of gamblers, yet nowhere is a promise held in greater honour. Therefore when we say that the tried and effective modern remedy called "Wampole's Preparation" never deceives any who resort to it in hope of benefit and cure, we may expiser to be believed. For this assurance is given oa what it has done in the past in countless cases, on its secord. It is only recom mended to accomplish what it was made t accomplish. Its action in Chlorosis, Anemia, La Gripps, General Debility, Throat and Lung Troubles, Blood Impurities, etc. is convincing. It is palatable as honey and contains the nutri tive and curative properties of Pure Cod Liver Dil, extracted by us from fresh cod livers, combined with the Compound Syrup of Hypophosphiles and the Extracts of Mali and Wild Cherry. Dr. Austin D. Irvine, of Canada, says: "I have used it in cases where cod liver oil was indicated but could not be taken by the patient, and the results following were very gratifying." It is effective from sensitive and nervous stomachs. It cannot deceive or dis- appoint you, and comes to the rescue of those who have received no benefit froin any other treatment. It stands for the medical triumphs - of the age. Sold by all chemists here.

IT IS DIFFERENT NOW- Once upon a time students of medicine held the notion that there were as many different diseases as the body has organs and parts ; every one of these ailmenta requiring ́` different treatment. So stupid mistuke could lead only to miserable failures. For the fact is, the body is a single machine; and what concerns one part of it concerns, more or less closely, all the rest. Thus we see how it happens that one remedy, or mode of treat. ment, may relieve and cure a variety of complaints, or what may appear like a variety, but are really various forms or out. same cause. Take, for comings of the example, Anemia, Scrofula, Poverty of Blood, General Debility, Influenza, Throat and Lung Diseases, etc.-a formidable array indeed they look to be; yet
WAMPOLE'S PREPARATION quickly abates the worst of such cases, and absolutely cures many which have been abandoned as hopeless. The reasons are: its power over the digestive and assimilating process, its action in expelling impurities from the blood, and its consequent ability to vitalize It is and rebuild the whole structure. palatabl; as honey and contains the nutritive and curative proper les of Pure Cod Liver Oil, the Compound Syrup of combined with Hypophosphites and the Extracts of Malt and Wild Cherry. It was not dreamed out, or discovered by accident; it was studied out, on the solid principles of applied medical science. it is precisely what it is said to be, and has won the coufidence of the publi: on that basis. You may resort to it with a faith and hope that arise from the history of what it has done for others. Dr. Phos, fiunt Stucky says: "The continued use of it in my practice, convinces me that it is the mos: palatable, least nauseat- ing, and best preparation now on the marker.' Every dose effective. You can t be dis appointed in it." Sold by chemists here and throughout the world and A. S. Watson & Ca, Limited.
