THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, TUESDAY, OCTOBER 14, 1902.
THE GRAND DUKE BORIS AND
AMERICAN CHORUS VIRLS.
Mrs. Roosevelt, the wife of the President, refused to mest the Grand Duke Boris, because of reports that he had been drinking wine from the slippers of chorus girls în Chicago, where, he was quoted as saying, he entertained the blondes of the chorus, reserving the pleasure of supping with brunettes, till he reached New York.
When he arrived at New York from Hong- kong where he was several months ago, the Grand Duke promptly-denied the story, but as he changed his plan to attend one theatre to go 561119.09to another at the telephoned request of a chorus girl, and was so intent watching the chorus that he said he was too busy to meet the Governor of New York Stats, the denial was not taken seriously,

Members of the Women's Temperance Union wrote to the President, who himself is not a total abstainer, requesting him not to receive the Duke, but the President did not see his way clear to refuse to receive the dis
with which the relations of America were traditionally friendly, especially as he is a cousin of the Tsay and accompanied by, the Russian Ambassador.
INDIA'S FOREIGN TRADE,
AN APPRECIABLE FALLING QEF, Following the slightly contracted trade in June, there was marked decrease in the total value of the foreign sea-bome trade in British India during the month of July, as compared with the same month in 1901. The total value is given as nearly 17 crores, representing a failing off of over 17 per cent. Smaller trade was general to both imports and exports, the former falling off by nearly 7 per cent and the latter by 24 per cent. The movements of treasure, so far as imports, were concerned, declined by only 6 lakhs, -and had little effect on the decreased trade. In exports of treasure the value dropped from* 270 lakhs to only 56 lakhs. Gold to the value of it crores was shipped by Government in the previous year against nil in the past month. Also on private account the quantity of silver shipped fell by 66 lakhs... The primary cause of the de- crease in imports of merchandise was a smaller value of imports in yarns and textile fabrics. There was a small decrease in silk goods; woollen goods dropped by over 3 lakhs in valué,

· THE BRIGHT SIDE OF LIFE. It is a feeling common to the majority of us that we do not get quite the amount-of-hap-- piness we are entitled to. Among the countless things which tend to make us more or less miserable ill health takes first place. Hannah More said that sin was generally to be attri- buted to biliousness. No doubt a crippled liver with the resulting impure blood, is the cause of more mental gloom than any other single thing. A chronic dyspeptic, says an eminent English physician, is always on the verge of a mental upset. And who can reskon up the fearful aggregate of pain, loss and fear arising from the many ailments and diseases which are familiar to mankind. Like a vast cloud it hangs over a multitude no one can number, You can see these people every. where. For them life can scarcely be said to have any "bright side" at all Fence the eagerness with which they search for relief and curo, Remedies like
WAMPOLE'S PREPARATION have not attained their high position in the confidence of the people by bald assertions and boasting advertisements. They are

Mrs. Roosevelt went to the residence of the President's uncle before the Grand Duke Boris arrived at Sagamore Hill, the President's home at Oyster Bay, and returned after he left.
The President-entertained the Grand Duke at luncheon, and after a visit of two hours' duration the distinguished visitor, returned to Newport, where he is being flonised.
In the event of his departing on scheduled time, the soubrettes of all the New York theatres have decided to go with the Duke to the pier and there bid him good-bye." In doing *this they are imitating their sisters of Chicago, who gathered at the railway station and blew kisses to his Royal Highness as his train started on its way eastward.
The Archduke has been in the United States for almost a month, and on his way across the Continent from San Francisco, to New York the papers have faithfully chronicled all the strange doings of the Duke, from his being thrown out of a theatre for refusing to cease smoking to his breaking an appointment' with the governor of the State of New York to accept a sudden invitation to a champagne
supper."
His Imperial Highness takes all this publi. city with the utmost good nature, and tells the reporters when they go-to interview him that he is a captive to the charms of the Ame- rican woman. Clergymen of the Russian Or- thodox Church, however, who are in America, have denounced from their pulpits the stories published about the Duke, and extol him as a pattern of all the virtues.

a four-master, twin screw training ship of 2,200 tons. The keel of the vessel will be laid in April or May next.
The N. Y. K. stramer Kushiro Mars built at the company's yard will be launched toward

occurred. Here the decrease was as much as 46 lakhs. Into Bengal and Burms the value, of receipts was greater, but into other provinces the decrease was very considerable. White goods and yam are alone responsible for the smaller trade, while under grey and coloured goods there was an improvement. Raw materials have mainly contributed to the smaller value of exports, the decrease being over crore. There was an increase of 13 lakhs in raw jute, but cotton fell by 17 lakhs, and hides and skins by 7, lakhs. Under seeds the contraction was as much as 96 lakhs. All the provinces sept away a smal ler supply of oilseeds, and with the exception of poppyseed, all descriptions participated in the falling off While the principal causes of the decreased trade have been stated, there were also fluctuations which resulted in larger business. In import metals rose by 14 lakhs in value. Under exports opium improved to the extent of ra lakhs, dressed hides and skins by 15 lakhs, and lac by nearly 5 lakhs.

THE WORD OF HONOUR.
The men who do as they say; the things that prove to be what they were said to be,-how. cheering it is to come upon them? We all hate to be deceived; especially when the decep- tion is, Intentional. But all mea are not liars, even if David did say so in his haste. If they were society would be impossibile. Everybody knows that business is based on credib
faith. Millions are bought daily on nothing: more solid than the pledged premises of men, -not written, merely verbal. The Stock Ex- changes are often called nests of gamblers, yet nowhere is a promise held in greater honour.

Therefore when we say that the tried and effective modern remedy called "Wampole's Preparation never deceives any who resort to it in hope of benefit and cure, we may expect to be believed. For this assurance is given on what it has done in the past it countless cases, on its record. It is only recom- mended to accomplish what it was made to accomplish. Its action in Chlorosis, Anemia, La Grippe, General Debility, Throat and Lung Troubles, Blood Impurities, etc. is convincing, It is palatable as honey and contains the nutri- tive and curative properties of Pure Cod Liver Oil, extracted by us from fresh cod livery, combined with the Compound Syrup of Hypophosphites and the Extracts of Mali and Wild Chery. Dr. Austin DrIrvine, of Canada, says: "I have used it in cases where cod liver oil was indicated but could not be taken by the
patient, and the results following were very gratifying." It is effective from sensitive and nervous stomachs. It cannot deceive or dis- appoint you, and comes to the rescue of those who have received no benefit from any other treatment. It stands for the medical triumphs of the age. Sold by all chemists hare.

claimed for them. That this remedy deserves its reputation is conceded. It is palatable ás honey and contains the nutritive and curative | properties of Pure Cod Liver Oil, combined with the Comp. Syrup of Hypophosphites, Extracts of Malt And Wild Cherry. Nothing has such a record of success in Scrofula, Anemia, Nervous Debility, Influenza, Throa and Lung Troubles, and all emaciating com- plaints and disorders, that tend to undermine the foundations of strength and vigour. Its use helps to show life's brighter side. Dr. W. H. B. Aikins, of Canada, says: "I am pleased to state that the results from using it have been uniformly satisfactory." You can take it
with the assurance of getting well. It is a preparation brought up-to-date and effective from the first dose. It never disappoints. At all chemists and A. S. Watson & Co., Limited.
