Whilst a Chinaman was engaged on work in the shaft tunnel of the new Canton and Macao boat under construction at the Hang. Hom docks, a serious accident occurred where by two of his mates were horribly burnt. It appeared that whilst performing his work, he allowed a lighted match to fall on some of the bitumen, a highly infammatory ingredient, which was lying around him. Naturally, the stuff caught fire, and instead of putting it out, the man lost his senses and made a bolt for the nearest outlet. Unfortunately two of his mates who were working a little further down the tunnel, and who were engaged on the same. work, could find no means of escape, and this with the overpowering fumes soon rendered than senseless. The matter was immediately reported to the European supervisers with the result that prompt action was taken, and after a very trying ordeal these two Chicamen were rescued, but not before they had been ho tibly burned. Medical aid was soon. obtained, and from latest reports we learn, that these two men are progressing favourably.
