A GRIM COLLECTION.

| RELICS OF NEWGATE.

All the relica at present preserved in New- gale Prison will be removed in dus course from the doomed building and added to the grim exhibition of mementoes of crime, at Scotland-yard. There are many articles closely identified with the history of the famous gaol, the London correspondent of the Birmingham Port mentions, that are worth preserving. The carious collection of plaster casts and death masks of criminals of a bygone age-ghastly souvenits of a practice long since abandoned-- old-fashioned pinioning apparatus, the gallows upon which so many malefactors have paid the last penalty, handcuffs, Jack Sheppard's chains, the black painted chair upon which condemned men sat during Sunday service in the chapel, the flogging pole, cat-o'-nine tails, and many other odds and ends are decidedly worthy of preservation. One curiosity of the collection is the traitor's axe, supplied to Newgate, very many years ago, but still unstained, by blood. It has never been used, in fact, because an ancient law providing that the body of a person' executed for bigh treason' shall he afterwards decapitated has not been enforced.

VINEYARD TRAGEDY.

DOMINICAN BROTHER KILLS A HOY AND

WOUNDS ANOTHER,

Rome is horror-stricken by a peculiarly' dastardly crime by a member of the Order of Dominican Brothers.

The Order owns vinegard just outside Porta Portese, which is left under the charge of one of the brothers, ‚a mari of peasapt extraction, Niccola Cuzzoli.

Last month Cuzzoli, saw. three little boys plundering one of the vines: Seizing a musket He gave chase, and soon overtook the poor little robbers, who were hampered in their flight by the luxuriance of the vines, Firing point blank. Cuzzoli killed one boy on the

spot, gravely wounding aanther, The third

managed to escape, and rushed to the local police station.

Meanwhile 'Cuzzoli fied from the vineyard, and took refuge in the Convent of Minerva, where he was tracked down by the police. He confessed the dreadful crime with the greatest cynicism.

Cesare Folci, the boy who was killed, was found face downwards, with a small bunch of - grapes grasped tightly in his fist, and a great

gaping wound between the shoulders.

GAOL MUTINY FRUSTRATED.

AT NAPLES.

Owing to the iron discipline introduced into -the-prisons-at-Naples by the new director Gallotti, the hardships of the prisoners were so increased that a little wille ago they determined to mutiny. Secret instructions were given, and a day for a concerted rising against the warders was fixed, chiefly, it is believed, through the agency of one prisoner who was recently transferred from one gaol to the other, and who carried round the general orders.

At 'the last moment, the prefect had wind of the threatened muticj. He instantly doubled all the guards, and poured into the prisons a strong force of soldiers. The malcontents being thus overawed, the prefect had time to sort. out the ringleaders, whom he a once caused to be separated and placed in strict isolation.

THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 4, 1902.

14 YEARS IN A COWSHED,

TERRIBLE STORY OF CRUELTY TO AN IMBECILE BROTHER.

A shocking case of cruelty has come to light in the village of Peliching in Lower Austria.

Burgomaster Styx had two sons, Peter and Leopold, to whom at his death he bequeathed a comfortable fortune. Peter being an imbecile, Leopold undertook the responsibility of his elder brother's future, and promised that be should be most affectionately treated.

This happened fourteen years ago. Leopold became an important man, a member of the Communal Committee, and Peter was forgot

ten by the outside world.

Then, after long oblivion, Peter's fate began to be talked about, and it was whispered that there was a mystery connected with his dis- appearance. Finally, the Burgomaster and the Commandant of the gendarmes called upon Leopold Styx, and asked him point blank where his brother Peter was. The man, taken by surprise, replied: "Peter is in the cowshed,"

The two officials went to the dark cowshed, and there among the kine they found, in a sort of kennel, the wretched imbecile. At the sound of Leopold's voice he crept forth on all fours, an old man of 64, head and face covered with busy hair, the head sunk and curved in towards the right shoulder from long confine ́ment, and the body—a skeleton-covered with a few filthy rags. The power of speech appears to have yane; he can only utter inarticulate sounds,

BAD YEAR FOR HOPS,·

LOWEST ACREAGE ON RECORD.

English hops seem to have fallen on evil clays. The prospects of the crop this season are bad; the weather from the outset has been

unpropitious. Hence quality is comparatively

poor.

It is thought that the output will be little more than half of that of last year. The average

yield per acre for the past 17 years has been nearly 83 cwt. On the present acreage this would mean a crop of over 400,000 cwt., but even optimists do not expect a great deal over 300,000 cwt.

Apart from the matter of quality, the actual acreage under hop crops this year is the lowest of which there is any official record. Since 1878, when there were over 70,000 acres, the record has varied considerably. This year the total is just over 48,000 acres.

THE BRITISH LOURDES.

A-GRIPPLE CURED BY THE WATERS OF ST.

7.

WINIFRIDE'S WELL.

Many pilgrimages and visits are made every year by the members of the Roman Catholic Faith to Holywell, in Wales, where is found St. Winifride's well. The maimed, the halt. the blind, the deaf, the dumb are taken to be bathed in the waters of the well over which the Saint presides. About ten days ago a lad, whose name is Thomas Wakefield, aged 16, residing at Silverdale, near Newcastle-under- Lyme, was taken to Holywell, and underwent the bathing in St. Winifride's well. This fad, about five years ago, met with a serious accid ent which left him a helpless cripple, and de- prived him of speech and hearing.

The doctors regarded his cure as hopeless. On 23 Aug., Father Maguire received a letter from one of the sisters at the hospice.connect ed with St. Winifridic's, stating that the lad was able to walk, and this was afterwards confirm ed by one of the Jesuit priests stationed at Holywell, On the following Sunday a further communication was received by the priest stating that the lad was cured of his dumbness

and able to converse.

attention of those who require such a remedy

This is the age of research and experiment, when all nature, so to speak, is ransacked by the scientific for the comfort and happiness of man. Science has indeed made giant strides during the past century, and among the-by no means least important-discoveries in medicine comes that of Therapion, particulars of which will be found in another column. This pre- paration is unquestionably one of the most kenuine and reliable Patem Medicines ever introduced, and has, we understand, been, used in the Continental Hospitals by Ricord, Rostan, Jober, Velpeau, Maisonneuve, the those who are regarded as authorities in such well-known Chassaignac, and indeed by all

matters, including the celebrated, Lallemand, and Rous, by whom it was some time since |- uniformly adopted, and that it is worthy the

we think there is no doubt. From the time of Aristeile downwards, a potent agent in the removal of these diseases has (like the famed philosopher's stone) been the object of search of some hopeful, generous minds; and far beyond the mere power-il such could ever have been discovered-of transmuting the baser metals into gold is surely the discovery of a remedy so potent as to replenish the failing energies of the confirmed roud in the une case, ast in the other so effectually, speedily and safely to expel from the system without the aid, or even the knowledge, of a second party, the pisons of acquired or inherited disease in all behind. Such is The New French Remedy their protean forms as to leave no taint or trace Therapion, which may certainty 'rank with, if not take pracedence of, many of the discoveries and noise have been made, and the extensive of our day, about which no little ostentation

and ever increasing demand that has been create for this medicine wherever_introduced appears to prove that it is d stined to cast into oblivion all those questionable remedies that were formert, the sole reliance of medical men.”İ Therapion may be obtai ed in England, direct Hop cultivation, costly and uncertain, has from the propri tor, and all the principal undoubtedly lost ground in England.

Kent is, as everyone knows, the greatest hop-growing county. Its hop area this year is over 29,600 acres, nearly 1,600 less than last year. Hereford comes next with something over 6,900 acres, then Sussex (about 4540) Worcester (3,780), Hants (just over 2,000). Surrey (969). Salop (125). THEY WILL REMAIN

The bump of reverence is overshadowed by the bump of intelligence in the 20th century man and woman. Old things are not pre- served simply, because they are old. What- soever is no longer useful must get out of the Nevertheless, progress that is not intelligent will not be permanent. We shall continue to breathe air, drink water and eat bread. There will be no "improvement" on the great essentials of living, and we do not want any. Babies will come into the world as they have from the beginning, and people will die out of it as they have done since the

world began.. Let us not run away with the idea that all of our treasured opinions are to be upset. Through every change, all things which, like

WAMPOLE'S PREPARATION have builded a réputation on bonour and good service, will hold their place. This effective remedy belongs to the past, the present and the future. It is not only up-to- date but ahead, of date. For Wasting Diseases, Impaired Nutrition, Influenza, Lung Troubles, Impure Humors in the blood with resulting skip affections, etc., it possesses the confidence of physicians and the people every- where. It is not expected to fail; it never does fail. The formula after which it is made is an inspiration. It contains the nutritive and curative properties of Pure Cod Liver Oil, extracted by us from fresh cod livers, combined with the Compound Syrup of Hypophosphites and the Extracts of Malt and Wild Cherry It is palatable as honey, and yet so medicinal as to be effective from the first dose. Pro- fessor Reddy, of Canada, says: "1 have much pleasure in stating that I have used it in cases of debility and have found it to be a very valuable remedy as well as pleasing to take." To trust it and try it is to be satisfied and thankful. "You cannot be disappointed in it." Sold by chemists here and everywhere throughout the world and A. S. Watson Co., Limited.
