THE PROGRESS OF THE.
`SHIPPING COMBINE.
NEARLY READY,
According to a London cable of the 25th ulto, to the Shanghai Times, news from the United States is daily awaited in relation to practical work upon the plans of the Morgan $500,000.00 Shipping Combine. While the details of the 00,000.00 plan have enjoyed sufficient advertisement to 6,639.00 be well understood, the Combine has been 876.85 discussed and treated so far as something to 134,714.25 be met by preparation for a time ahead rather Balance of working account, 1901 270,056.99 than as a tangible condition actually menacing the Atlantic trade of European carriers, When Mr. Morgan turned homeward from this season's visit to Europe, the New York cor- respondents of the London newspapers seem to have been instructed to keep eyes and ears open for anything he might say or do in connection with this business. They are sending letters and wires, and the papers print accounts daily from New York with almost as free display of space as if the news were gathered locally. Heretofore the cables have indulged largely in speculation. In that day's Chronicle the New York correspondent wires that Mr. Morgan informs him of the comple tion of all the material working details of the plan and says that only the final step toward operation remains to be taken, in the appoint- ment of managers of the enterprise. Aucoun cement in this respect will probably be made in a few days..

view of the future of China, which it declares is in a hopeless condition owing to a large extent to the "pernicious influence" exercised in Pekin by Great Britain and other enemies of Russia. Russi 1, continues the journal, is the predestined ruler of Asia, the needs of which are entirely misunderstood by Western Powers. Russian influence must be predominant in China, or the disintegration and partition of the country will become inevitable.

COALING AT SEA.
The Lidgerwand Manufacturing Co., New York, has recently installed on the U.S. battle- ship Illinois the Lidgerwood-Miller Marine Cableway for coaling vessels at sea. The merits of this system are fully indorsed by Admiral Deway and the late Rear Admiral Sampson. The complete equipment is now fully in place
the U.S.S. Illinois and it is believed that it fulfills all factors of the problem. The only "machines" required for a Marine Cable- way are two special operating winches, but these have been so designed that they serve double purpose and therefore take up no ad- ditional space. Upon the superstructure deck of the U.S.5. Illinois there were two winches. These winches have been put ashore and the new winches have been substituted occupying precisely the same bed and employing the same foundation bolts.
In harbour coaling the Nigger heads are used, and they will hoist 2,340 lb joo feet per minute. The shipping drum will develop a rope speed of about 1,700 feet per minute and life a load of one half ton. These winches operate the load carriage between collier to warship. One winch draws the loaded' carriage towards The Russian press continues the publication warship; the other winch draws the empty car of alarmist articles on the position of affairs in

A CONTENTED WOMAN, Aside from form or features, she has an attractiveness all her own. The bloom on her, cheek, the elasticity in her step, the ring of her voice, her enjoyment of life-all these are magnets, which draw others to her side. Wonderful and valuable as it is, health is not so difficult a thing to obtain as some dis- couraged ones think. Most of the troubles of women arise from impure blood, impaired nutrition, low vitality and general debility. Modern science furnishes the most successful of remedies for these conditions-namely

It is palatable as honey and contains the AWA MARU nutritive and curative properties of Pure Cod Liver Oil, extracted by us from fresh cod livers, combined with the Compound Syrup of Hypophosphites and the Extracts of Malt and Wild Cherry. Taken before meals it improves the appetite, makes fat. restores vitality, enriches the blond and cures those weaknesses peculiar to the sex, which are the seat of their troubles. It is a blessing to Tired Wives, Nursing Mothers and Girls growing into womanhood. It colours the pale faces and rounds out the hollow chests. In a word, it nourishes and develops the entire body, and brings happy surprises to feeble, hopeless and discouraged sufferers. Dr. E. J. Boyes says: "I have found it à preparation, of great menit. In a recent case a patient gained nearly twenty pounds in two months treat- ment, in which it was the principal remedial agent" It is the typical medicinal success of our age, for time has proved our claims are supported by results, and a remedy which acts in harmony with nature's own efforts and processés. No demand has been made upon it for relief and cure, that has not met with instant response. One bottle convinces. Effective from the first dose. "You cannot bel disappointed in it." Like all good things it is imitated. Sold by chemists here and every- where throughout the world and A. S. Watson Co., Limited.

THE WORD OF HONOUR.

The men who do as they say; the things that prove to be what they were said to be,-how
cheering it is to come upon them. We all hate to be deceived; especially when the decep- tion is intentional, But all men are not liars, even if David did say so in his haste. If they were society would be impossibile. Everybody knows that business is based on credit, on faith. Millions are bought daily on nothing more solid than the pledged promises of men, not written, merely verbal. The Stock Ex changes are often called nests of gamblers, yet nowhere is a promise bold in greater honour. Therefore when we say that the tried and
