CERMAN GUNBOATS FOR CHINA According to the Ostasiatische Lloyd, the German naval authorities have Dow fixed the type for the new river gunboats for service on the China Station. The boats will be of 170 tons and the dimensions are as follows: Length 48 metres, beam 8 metres, draught 61 centimetres, with a speed of at least 13 knots per hour. This new type of boat will be built of Siemens-Martin steel and be protected by 8 millimetre nickel steel plates, whilst the armament will consist of one 8.8 and one 5 centimetre quick firing gun, as also 2 machine guns. The boats will carry complements of 53 officers and men.

Thus ended the first day's sports and the spectators wended their way homeward after a most enjoyable afternoon.

CHINA AND THE WORLD'S FAIR.

MR. BARRETT LEAVES FOR THE FORTS

The Hon. John Barrel, Commissioner General for St. Louis World's Fair, left on the Haitan this morning for Foochow; via Swalow and Amor. He intends tó vint the Viceroy at the invitation of the Wai Wu Pu-the Board of Foreign Affairs at Peking. The invitation was conveyed through the United Bales Minister, the Hon. E. H. Conger At Swalow and Amoy as well as at Foochow he will confer with the leading Chinese officials, and also the Commissioners of Customs. Afterwards, Mr. Barrett, proceeds to Shanghai for another conference with Sheng Kudy-pao, the Chinese, Minister of Commerce. He will then return on the new Pacific Mail liner Korea, arriving back in Hongkong about the 1st of October. Mr. Theo. Hardee, who is so ably assi ting Mr. Barrett throughout the long and arduous tour is remaining in Hongkong, where he is staying at the Feak Hotel THE MURDERED MISSIONARIES.
