rent number of the Indian Forester in which JUST LANDED by ss. " PRINZESS IRENE" The only works that need be contemplated hemises several interesting questions with for some years to come, in connection with the regard to the policy of fire protection as car-MMENTHAL SWISS, LIMBURG, KROUTOR, BRIE, ROQUEFORT, low-level sewers, are the re-laying of the sewers
ried out in the Burma forests, expressing the NEUFCHATEL and CAMEMBERT; · on the New Praya Reclamation in all cases opinion that one fierce fire resulting from the in which settlement has caused detrimental accumulation of dry leaves and other inflam distortion and alteration of the originally promable matter is likely to do as much damage jected level. This work should, however, be de ferred until the New Reclamation has thorough ly settled, so that no further movement need be anticipated. Some sewers on even the Old Reclamation will require re-Jaying, notably those leading to the No. 1 oulfall at Belcher's Point. Notwithstanding the fact that the Praya Wall in this locality was constructed many years ago, there is evidence to shew that settle ment has taken place relatively recently, and that it may be going on even at prosent.
RECOMMENDATIONS."
The recommendations which I have made, with regard to street aewers, in this and a pre- vious report, may be summed up as follows:- (a) Complete the outfail sewers across the New Reclamation.
(6.) Prevent by means of additional care in Scavenging the introduction of improper solida into the street sewer.
(e) Trap all street sewer gulleys with im proved traps and gratings.
(d) Make an experiment as to the effect of vigorous flushing at low tides with well or sea water, on one section of the low-level sewera. If this experiment is successful, and leads to saving in working expenses, extend the same system to other sections.
(e) Close the ventilating openings in the sewer manholes.
(If, contrary to expectation, ventilating openings or rather vents prove necessary let them be provided, either, by mans of the bouse-sewer ventilating pipes, removing the intercepting traps, or by providing separate elevated ventp pes carried up about the neighbouring buildings as suggested in a pre vious report.
(e) Whenever the roots of trees caure obstructions, cut down the trees; or substitute: cast iron pipes, with lead and yam joints for stoneware pipes.

twenty five years or anything like that period. Moreover, he thinks that small fires are by no means unmixed evils, especially in teak forests. He says that in view of au much money being spent on the extermination of the mosquito, it is curious that we should also be spending money "to preserve the rank undergrowth in which the wily anopheles love lo lurk, and to prevent fire seeking them out in the dark hollows of trees where (am I wrong in thinking ?) they lie dormant during the hot weather."
EXPERIENCES WITH
GRIFFINS.
Bond, the well-known jockey, has arrived back in Calcutta from Penang and the other Straits meetings (says the Indian Planters Garette) At Selangor he got a couple of very nasty falls riding in "griffin" races, and the result
of one of them was a broken collar-hone and
three ribs. He is now, however, ali right again, but he has scratched ali "griffins" for the fu ture, and he says that the hairy-heeled brutes that they get in the Straits are not worth riding, For the most part they are unbroken and they will rea anywhere rather than straight. When Bond got the bad fall the unbroken "brumby first cannoned into one rail, then bored all across the course, and crashed through the other, impaling itself on a post and naturally having to be destroyed. In the other fall he got the horse was also killed. Bond says the Penang course is a very pretty one and well done by in every way excepting its griffin races, which are, he thinks, a mistake.

THE BEST PREVENTIVE OF ALI INFECTIOUS DISEASES.
It has come to my knowledge that considered the extension of the Waosung end of the able inconvenience has been experienced in line from Wengts'ao Creek to the bend in the the case of European houses in the upper vicinity of the North fort of the port of Woo- levels of the City. These tenements are provided with a drain, as defined in my former News, Mr. Chuang, the Assistant Manager of 7184]

Instructions which I propose to send out are, observed.
DRAINAGE.
I have little to add to what 1 have said in my previous Report concerning the drainage of the city.. Before Anything can be finally suggested a complete plan must be prepared of the dmins and nullahs as they exist.
The following suggestions may, however; be of use in the future consideration of this subject.
16. Drains may be classified as follows (a.) Main dreins or nullahs running direct down to the sea and carrying water from the hills above."
(6.) Branch drains which run usually more or less in an East and West direction and convey water into the main drains or pullahs above defined, The aforesaid main drains or nullahs may be further sub-divided into two portions, namely, the flat or tidal portion which extends perhaps? to Des Voeux Road or further inland and the hill portion which has an abundant gradient".
RECAFITULATION.
20 I will now briefly recapitulate the recom-: mondations which have been made with regard to drainage in this and previous reports.
(a.) Let covered drains or nullahs be avoided to the utmost extent possible.
(5) Let the inverts o drains, at their outlets to the sea, be at mean sea level or higher if possible.
(c.) In the case of flat areas near to sea whenever covered drains are necessary, as in the case of the Praya Reclamation and other Reclamations, let them run by the shortest possible route to special outlets to the sex, and do not attempt to connect then to main drains er nullahs which are tide-locked.

THE WORD OF HONOUR.
The men who do as they say the things that prove to be what they were said to be, how cheering it is to come. upon them. We all hate to be deceived, especially when the decep- tion is Intentional But all men are not liars, even if David did say..so in his haste. If they were society would be impossibile. Everybody knows that business is based on credit, 00 faith. Millions are bought daily on nothing more solid than the pledged promises of men,
ment and levels of streets be so plan ned as to minimise the length and not written, merely, verbal. The Stock Ex- size of underground drains,

It is more important to effective modarn: remedy called “Wampola's exclude sewage from the drain than Freparation" never deceives any who resort to rain-water from the sewer. With theit in hope of benefit and cure, we may expect gradients which obtain in Hongkong to be believed. For this assurance is given on it is almost always possible to provide what it has done in the past in countless
storm overflows should any power become gorged with rain water (1) Let a complete Record Plan be prepared of the drains of Hongkong, covered or otherwise this being in existence a definite scheme may be prepared..

ar. I have not in this and other reports con cerning the sewerage referred to Kowloon, I have altogether refrained from so doing because I look upon the sewerage system of Kowloon as provisional or temporary only. It may nat be necessary to carry out a completo scheme of sewerage for some years to come. Neverthe lesa. I am of opinion that a defalte scheme should be prepared and adopted so that all work done may ultimately fall in with the sanctioned scheme and so that nothing done, or to be done in future, will require to be undone.
