-CANTON: NOTES.

A

(From Our Own Correspondent)

CANTON, August 5th, THE TYPHOON SINGA During the last two days Canton experienced the strongest wind which it has had this season; Water reached its highest mark for some years on Sunday, The local launch and passage Iraffic was completely disorganized. So far as I can learn no damage was done, but the storm caused a good deal of inconvenience. To the south of Ganton the country was badly flooded and the launches were nar able to follow the channel, Last-night a dozen or more launches went share and had to wait for the high tide to float them pik Then they anchored till morning.

LI KA CHEUK.

Li Ka Cheuk, magistrate of Shun Tak, is very ill. Saturday night he was reported dead Funday he was a little heater and called out his full guard of sellers to keep off the evil spirits which he imagined had come to carry him away. The people of Tai Leung would be very gind if these evil spirits would carry him away. He has few friends in the district, ex cept it be among the rabbers. The cowardly people took advantage of his severe illness to placard the city denouncing Li and making. known his wickedness.

SHUN TAK

Grent damage has been done throughout the Shun Tak district by the recent heavy rains, In

many places the country has been flooded and many mulberry orchards destroyed. Rice fields have also been badly damaged. One men who had started a large orange orchard had all the trees killed by the water, involving the loss of several thousand dollars. Hundreds omen have been thrown out of work and many from among these have gone to swell the ranks of the robber bands. This accounts for the anusual number of robberies in the Shun Tak district during the past month or two.

THE KWANGSI REBELLION.

The rebels are spreading and several Yamens have been burnt by them, says the Shanghai Times. The following may be taken as a rellable report. It is a telegram wired by the Provincial Treasurer of Kwangsi, Chang Tseng ying, addressed to Wang Chil-chun, the new Governor of the same province, which reads as follows"The rebels have overwhelmed the province (Kwangsi), their movements are un-" known. Sometimes they appear in large num boy, and at other times they disperse, the Viceroy (of Liang Kwang) is making Ngochow his headquarters. The imperial troops are ill. supplied and ill-provisioned, 1. (Chang) nwing to my chronic illness, on the 16th of the 5th Moon.applied for the permission of the Govern- or, Ting, to retire, and he, the ex-governor, on the 13th of the 5th Moon memorialised the throne on my behalf.".

From the official report of the master of the Pelayo we learn that she picked up the Ban Hin Guan yesterday morning at 8 am. She was then flying distress signals, and the Pelayo on going to her assistance, first learned of the collision that had occurred. From the injured vessel the relayo first removed 1.13 passengers, and then proceeded to take her in tow, getting under way with her at about noon,

Of the passengers, 21 out of the 113 wore from the Prins Alexander, ninetees of these being officers or members of the crew and two passengers. After getting under way the Pelayo Passed through a quantity of wreckage but saw no floating bodies.

The Ban Hin Guan, Captain Scott, is a vessel of 199 tons register and is owned by Messrs, Wes Bin & Co. She cleared from this port on Monday for Port. A dreadful explosion took place yesterday. 15th inst, at 12.15 p.m. in the Chinese Gun. powder Godown, half way between the West gate and Hong Sang Shau bridge. It destroy ed two machines and all the ammunition and stoted powder. The explosion was felt and heard at Pogoda anchorage, while some of the houses in Fonchow trembled as by an earth. quake. It is not known certainly how many lives were lost, but some twenty workmen and nine Chinese passers-by are known to have perished. Three cannon were blown to a great distance. One landed at Hung Hong Dais, one to Sing Muang village and another to Po Deng village, There were not many houses

in the immediate neighbourhood but eight were totally wrecked. H.E. the Viceroy had visited the place only an hour previous, and at 3 p.m. he again visited the ruins. As no persons in or about the godown escaped death, the cause of the explosion cannot yet be determined, an investigation will be made by the local authorities,

Shortly after 9.30 p.m. last evening, says the Shanghai Timer of the 28th ult, the Fire De partment was called into action by an alarm of fire at the comer of Rue de la Whangpoo and Rue de la Paix, French Concession. The De- partment quickly responded to the call, but by the time they arrived on the scene of action the blake had startling headway, enveloping a number of houses. Hoses weraquickly brought to bear on the confiagation. which, after a few hours of arduous work was finally got under control. It could not be ascertained hat night the full extent of the damage. About fourteen houses were destroyed, many Chinese being rendered homeless.

ONLY TWENTY SAVED

The Ban Hin Guan at once did all possible to rescue those on board the sinking ship and managed to save some 20, the rest for the most part perishing.

Captain Moss, of the Prins Alexander, managed to get away in a boat with some natives, and made for Muar and Mr. Campbell, the Second Engineer, was also saved.

--- MR CAMPBELL'S ESCAPE. ?.. He was on duty down below when the Chief Officer, Mr. Schwartz-who was sub Requently drowned-called him to come up for his life as the ship was sinking. He hurried on deck, just as the vessel was going down, and managed to cling to a beam of wood that was brought, with the inrush of water on to the deck. He held on to the wood till he was picked up by the master of the Bin Hin Guan a short time after.

Altogether some go persons are believed to have parished including Mr. C. G. Schwartz, the Chief Officer, Mr. Findlay McIntyre, the

Chief Engineer, and Mr. Norris, the Third

Engineer. The other victims were all Chinese or Malays,

A noticeable fact in connection with this terribly sad affair in that both the vessels in- volved in the collision were not, in the opiulon of a large section of the shipping community. here, Bufficiently manned. Besides a Captain, sach of these ships carried only one European pavigating officer, and it has come to be apparent that there should be two officers on all such ships.
