The boat- swain and two quartermasters were found guilty and fined $250 or three months. The cook was discharged as he was in the employ of the boatswains. China is no longer to the regarded as a curiosity," was a remark recently made by Prince CHEN, the special ambassador BLEND presenting the Emperor of China at the
Coronation ceremony.
Like many other foreigners in the home country he fell a ready victim to the wary journalist and inta brief interview gave his views on the future of Chinese trade.
Having regard to the fact that he is in the immediate circle of the Imperial Court, the second cousin to the Emperor, and the son of Prince Ching, of the Chinese Foreign Office considerable weight and importance is attached to his remarks, and this coupled with the fact that. at the present time great interest is being centred on China by reason of the revision of the tariff his views upon the future trade of the country call for more than passing remark.China, is nu longer to be regarded as a curiosity," —a sentiment not unfrequently expressed and having a tendency to bring more pro- minently before the notice of the world the great and all important fact that the unknown Empire of Chitta, still. tying dormain as it has laid for thousands of years, is possessed of an embyro capable of development into a power that could dominate the markets of the world. -Admitting that the therto unfathomable traits of Chinese character áre slowly broad- itsening out and that the fight of Western influence is gradually shining on the Empire one must consider the directioin in which the Occident will benefit the Orient, and must of necessity take into account the advantages that should accrue.to the West from her in- tercourse with the East. The problem undoubtedly lies in the direction of commer- cial development, and from the little that is known regarding the possiblities of the expansion of trade it is acknowledged that England should continue to take the lead in the opening up of the Chinese Empire. In the words of Prince Cues, "England should be the principal factor in the future develop ment of China,” at all events so far as coin- -mercial expansion is concerned. The relations of Great Britain and China appear to be most friendly, and as the influence of the West is evidently being welcomed by the East there is no reason not strive by why England should special effort to secure the Chinese trade, -of which at present she already com- 'mands by far the greater past. Other nations are creeping in with slow and cer- tain step, and unless the pushfulness of Byi- tain is exhibited to a greater extent the country may stand every chance of losing much of that trade she already commands, and, with it, her prestige in the Bast. His ASBESTOS CEMENT for BOILERS, Imperial Highness opines that influences are distinctly favourable to British enterprise as its goods commend themselves, and chant has secured a deservedly high reputa. tion. With the opening up of railways, and beller facilities for coast and internal transport the resources of the Empire could be developed to great advantage and, Estimates and Samples furnished on according to His Imperia Highness, the trade of the country would become four application
hundred times greater that at the present time. In reply to whether China was mak- ing any conscious effort to develop her trade by the adoption of Western methods, he said, I regret I cannot answer, because with us there is no specifically.
