the Straits Settlements. He suggested that if his Lordship saw right he might dispense with the documents and admit Mir. Ferrers.

It appears that on the 24th Jute the prisoners, carrying are arms and knives, boarded a junk, abbed four men, and two women, and stole a quantity of gold washed and silver jewelry, and articles of clothing. The first witness, wito was abot in the hand, was told to show the wound to the jury who inspected it. The second recognised one af the prisoners as a man who had been employed as a deck band on the junk about a year ago, and the third inspected two pairs of trousers, recovered by the police. He was asked if he recognised them, and replied yes, they were made by my wife. A female witness said that about eight robbers boarded the junk; and one, with a blacked face, pointed a firearm at her, while the others did the pillaging. She recognised one of the prisoners in the dock as one of the robbers. Another witness said a man armed with a knife attacked him so he jumped over six. board and swam ashore. Other witnesses were

This they failed to do, and just a the ship was about to sail, the two turned up and were promptly marched off to durance vile They were duly taken before the Major, who severely reprimanded them, and sentenced them to three extra guard. The other was a far more serious affair. It occurred in the Chinese Sapper Section, where a corporal of the Company ordered one of his men todo guard duty. Thisthe sapperrefused, pleading sickness
and other excuses. From words it came:10 blows, and finally the sapper drew his bayonet and attempted to stab his superior officer when three men of the Wei-hai-wei regintent, scized hold of him and had him brought before Serg-Major Putdoa, their instructor, who im mediately reported to Major Chapman. This occurred on the 30th May. A Court Martial was, duly held, and Gunner Leykum, of the Field Battery, did duty as interpreter. The prisoner was finally sentenced to 14 days hard labour,

A sequel to the court martial was a practical joke which we played on Corp. Gubbay Gunners Ellis and Michael. We informed them the Major had decided to send them back to Hongkong as a special guard with the sapper who attempted to stab his superior officer. Of -course it was a made-up matter, but I can safe- ly state that they were pretty well scared. The reason why we picked on these three men was because they deserted our quarters, and 'were not content with anything unless it was first class. Three ringing cheers were given by the boys when we were informed that Feace had been declared. All Canada is joyful over the
news.
