SERUM IN PLAGUE CASES.

Speaking at a meeting of the Bombay Medi- cal Profession on the 18th ult, Dr. Tumar, the Health Officer of Bombay, delivered an address which was chiefly concerned with the use of Lustig's serum in plague cases. Dr. Turner made the following roimarks on the state of knowledge concerning plague :-'

The micro-organism which is associated with plague was discovered by Kitasate in 1894 during the epidemic in Hongkong, and observ- atians have been made on it by almost every known bacteriologist. It is present in the characteristic bubos of bubonic plague, often In pure culture, but frequently associated with streptococci and staphylococci. The organisin is described as a short thick.cocco baccilus forming diplococcal forms, but is also found in streptococcal chains in the peritonial effalons and takes on involu tion forms in artificial media. It is also pre- sent in the organs and lympathics, and in later stages in the blood. It is claimed by some observers that the organism is mortile, but this is denied by the majority. No accu- rate Information is at hand that it is sporebear ing, but more investigation is required in this direction. It grows hest at a temperature below blood-heat, 30 deg. to y6 deg, centigrade, but can live and thrive at 6 deg centigrade. It bas resisted the cold of a Russian winter, and it retains its vitality for many months when grown artificially in suitabi” media in the pre sence of moisture and oxygen. It is feebly resistant to dry heat and chemical disinfectants; a temperature of yo deg, ce kills the organism,

and I in 1,000 solution of acid perchloride of mercury is sufficient to renderit inert. The organism has been found in

RATS, MICE SQUIRREL", CATS &C. It has not been satisfactorily determined in soil, air, water, or food.

Speaking generally, plague is not, under ordinary conditions, a highly infectious disease, as is shown by the immunity which exists in those in contact with and attending on the sick.

Its infectivity depends chiefly on direct infec. tion, enhanced by overcrowding insanitary houses, famine, poverty, and disease. particular cases of pneumonic plague, a high degree of infection has been noticed,

It is a well established fact that the serum of

. the blood of animals which have been infected with repeated inoculations of the specific germ and toxin af diphtheria is capable of acting as an antidote to the poison secreted by the ape- cific diphtheria germ in the human body, Working on this basis, Yersin and Lustig experimented with a view to its angličation in 'the case of plague. The method of Yersin differs from that of Luwig, but in both the object was to find out an anti-toxin to the poison given off by the plague bacteria. In the case of plague it is different from diphtheria, where the organism Termains fa situ and ex- crates a poison which is known as toxin, while

The plague organism being found in the blood as well as in the organs and glands, contains a protein within the protoplasmic substance of the microbe itself. The difficulty then which occurs, and which has still to be overcome, is to ascertain what substance exists in the blood and what addiment is required to be capable of acting as an anti-toxin and bactericidal and causing dissolution of the protoplasm. The experiments of Pheiffer: Menchukoff and Bordet, Bullock and Klein, and others show why the serum from the blend of an animal immunised against cholera is unable to cure a human being suffering from that disease, and the same reason applies to plague, and the Mr. J. The results en far as obtaining an autidote, for plague have not been successful; but that many valuable lives have ban saved cannot be denied, and it has supplemented the knowledge obtained by most recent observers. Results of scientific investigations of the most delicate and tedious and dangerous description cannot be made to order. In the time of panic the preparation of serum began ;immediate demand was made for seruin of which great things were expected; the results were hurried; the seram was used before it was ready. The class of patients on whom it was tried and the condition of the hospital treatment were all ⚫against successful results. Even if the serum was the best obainable, I do, not ask you to accept all or any of the figures as promis- ing that Lustig's plague serum is the antidote for plague.1 maintain, however, that here in this city of Bombay, where plague has existed for six years, scientific investigation into the causes and cure of the disease ought to be carrived out....
